The best developers have a good social life like a non-developers? I was thinking about this and about my career and I do not think so, programming life requires much study and time every day and consuming. You have to sacrifice many things many times: parties, time with family, time with friends. There was another topic here at The Lounge wondering the best developers are so sad: Frustated programmers (http://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=3896109#xx3896109xx). What do you think?

I think I don't care. No... I'm sure of it. I have family, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintences, and targets (some of which are or were family, neighbors, co-workers, and acquaintences). No friends. Friends want to borrow stuff.

Sounds like you live to work instead of work to live. My social life is firmly outside of the workplace and is pretty full. I do, now and again, go for a 'drink' with my work colleagues but that's what they are: colleagues. You should have a clear division between work and home. Note I still spend time studying and reading but not so it is all that I do!

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. It might feel that way in the beginning, but burning the candles at both ends doesn't make a programmer "the best"

In my experience, _good_ programmers have a good social life; _bad_ ones do not. Good programmers know how to balance work and leisure, and will not always sacrifice a good beer with friends from staying at work (or in the basement) to finish up some code. But at some point we all are professionals and we need to get the job done; and will work hard to make it work and meet schedule. It's no different than being a professional in a lot of different domains. I've know chemists (Organic chemistry) who spent days and nights in their labs performing time critical synthesis.

                  Watched code never compiles.

I think it's true that the early years in this career take a toll on your social life, especially if your are in a startup. As you gain experience in solving problems and build a repertoire of reusable code, you become more efficient and effective leading to better pay, and more personal time to enjoy it. For me, the first five or six years were full of late night and weekend coding sessions. Nowadays, it's generally 8 to 5 M-F with pleny of time for family and friends.

I don't think there is a correlation between good/bad developpers and the social life. Both can have good or bad social lifes, it depends more on you personality.

No friends. Friends want to borrow stuff.

and have a much easier time stabbing you in the back since you don't watch them as close as your outright enemies :-D

Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow.

I'm married(18 years) and have three teenagers. There is no time for a social life anyway, its all at home.

I have a great social life. Oh wait, you said the "best developers". ;) And the fantastic thing about working off site is that I can shift my work around to accommodate my social life, rather than vice versa. Call forwarding and cell phones and wifi and laptops and remote desktop and GoToMyPC are the coolest applications of technology as they enable a wonderful mobile environment. Marc

See what happens when I leave you guys alone for a moment... I am sure that Pete's wife is a very nice loving person, but my wife would take exception to my taking on additional debt.

It was broke, so I fixed it.
