how to make money ?

I'm 15 years old, And I've been learning VB.NET and C# for 2 years ( I'm learning from e-books ,from msdn.microsoft.com , and of course from CodeProject :-D ) I'm also very good at using Windows XP because I use them for 8-10 years ! Is there any possibility that I can use my knowledge to make some money (not with hacking and cracking ) ??? Please don't tell me " you don't know too much to get a job" or "there are too many people that would do exactly the same thing that you can, without getting payed e.g freeware programs, etc " because I already know it !! some programming contests for teenagers could also be of some help :) (once again, please don't say "Why don't you google 'programmins contest ' and find if there is one that is suitable for you ? " because the last time I did this ( one week ago) I found a contest that was finished in 2003 :-D ) Thank you very much !!
if you can think of some program that people may buy, develop it then sell it, that could be a way in - it's also a good way to continue to learn as, if you have a goal (completing an application) then you will have to learn all of the parts in order to finish the project. Of course, finding a suitable application is difficult. But ask around - assuming you're at school, what programs would your classmates like? What about the teachers? Is there any small(ish) program you could write that you may be able to sell several copies off, for a small fee (generally much easier than trying to charge a lot to a single client) I always think its best as a beginner to program something that interests you (so you are also a potential purchaser) As an example, one of the first programs I wrote and let out into the wild, other than games, was a program to schedule TV recordings using a TV capture card whose software didn't support it. I gave it away free, but that was in the pre-paypal days when getting money off people on the internet was a little harder - these days, you can set up a web site, and take cash from people, much easier. maybe a CPian will have an idea of an application the world is waiting for?

Or you could create your own software and sell it as a shareware. A friend of mine create a PHP online form generator, and earn > $USD3.000/mo

At your age I would rather look for knowledge than money. Anyway, you might try finding a job at www.odesk.com, or try your skills at any programming competitions (Google Code Jam, Top Coder, etc.).

I agree with the others, rentacoder is probably your best start, due to your age - they are now called VWorker[^] - but I would strongly suggest that before you even start trying to earn money for coding you brush up on your Google skills. If the best you can do is find eight-year old competitions, then they really need some work! Good google-fu is pretty much essential for any modern coder as nothing is on paper any more...

Of course you can use your skills to make money - age is not a barrier. Our own David Wulff, IIRC, was earning a fine living from his own company long before he was old enough to leave his parents' home. It takes a lot of things beyond writing excellent software to do so, of course. You need ideas, an ability to sell others on the value of your ideas and the products you build to display them, an unswerving belief in yourself and your skills, and the discipline required to run a business; math is also required, at least enough to keep accurate books of account and prepare tax returns without getting into trouble. A little luck comes in handy, too! :-D As a general rule, I'd suggest that you find something that is hard to do, find a way to make it easy to do, then write the software to do it. Find something tedious and time consuming, and write an application that makes it consume less time to do. It doesn't matter what form it takes - a Windows application, a website, a mobile phone app - so long as it addresses a need that enough people feel. The smaller your market, the higher price you'll have to charge, and the harder it will be to sell. Small apps that appeal to many and cost very little will generate revenue with a lot less effort. It's your choice. A wise old (probably dead by now) con man who made a ton and wrote books about it decades ago once said something like, "If you want to be rich, find something you can buy or make for $1, and sell it for $9.99." I think his name was Joe Carbo, or something like that. Anyone these days will risk $10 on something that looks interesting, even if it's crap. And the price is low enough that very few will ask for a refund if it's really garbsge. Obviously, I favor the cheap, handy app that millions will buy over the incredibly wonderful, super duper killer app with all the features one could ever need that sells for an arm and a leg. I'm not much of a salesman, and I don't think I could sell such a high priced super-product for the price it would be worth. But I could sell a dirt cheap something-or-other that does something useful and unique quite easily. Most importantly, have fun. If your primary goal is to make money, you're headed for a very empty and sad life. If you just want to get paid for what you love doing, though, that's quite another story, and probably one with a happy ending. Best of luck to you! :-D

I too agree to go with rentacoder. There you can do and earn as much as you can. But try to hide your age. is my best advice. And also learn new aspects and keep you upto date. You can earn as much as you can.

Sure you can. Everybody and his dog need some web pages. It's like mowing somebody's lawn. You can earn a few bucks, but it will not get you rich. Are there no small businesses where you live? Our intern is financing his driver's license partially by programming something for his driving instructor.

A number of driving lessons (theory and practical) are required by the law. Just asked him, he is sitting at the next desk. He had to take at least about 20 required lessons and this will cost 1100 € minimum.

Apparently there is no requirement for driving lessons here in Arizona, as the people born and raised here are seriously deficient in driving knowledge and skills. We're in our annual monsoon season here, and so the traffic signals are frequently behaving strangely. When in doubt, they fall back to a mode wherein the major street gets a blinking yellow signal - meaning slow down and proceed with caution - and the minor cross-street gets a blinking red light - meaning stop, and wait until it is safe to proceed. Every day this week I've been stuck behind a moron on the main state highway who sees the flashing yellow light and comes to a complete stop, as if it was a red light. Worse yet, these pinheads refuse to proceed until someone stopped at the cross-street enters traffic, usually after trying to signal said moron to proceed without success. When I was growing up we had a class in school that was required - General State Requirements, or GSR for short. The class had three segments- How not to get The Clap from your girlfriend, government-sponsored lies about the effects of smoking dope, and how to drive. The driving part was the only interesting bit, and the only part that was technically accurate. We spent half the allotted time driving simulator machines and watching gruesome movies of real accidents, and the other half driving real cars with an instructor on real roads. I still have a lot of respect for those instructors, and the doctors who prescribed their stress medications. I can state as an absolute fact that my generation consists of individuals who are far better drivers than anyone who followed us in school after budgets were cut and the training was eliminated. We were taught situational awareness, emergency responses, and courtesy, all of which are sorely lacking on the roads today. I can honestly say that I haven't had an automobile accident in 38 years, and the the only reason that I can't claim 40 years is because an uninsured Mexican rammed me stopped at a red light without slowing down in 1973. I know that the training I received in school is the reason I have survived for so long, and I am grateful for it. One of the dumbest budgetary choices the Peoples' Republic of California ever made was to eliminate Driver Training for all high school students. That was a minor savings in the short term, with a major cost impact in the long term that was never competently evaluated. I hope your friend takes the class seriously, and really tries to learn as

I'm pretty sure it was thoroughly evaluated by a really smart person who determined that cutting this cost at that time would rake in a lot of money down the years via traffic violation tickets. How will the state and the police earn if all drivers drove safely and courteously? :)

My only advice to you is to keep doing what you love to do and network. Most people will not bother looking at a 15 year old but some will. If you walk the walk they will notice and will want to work with you. Perseverance and patience. Good luck. :)

It depends on what you've done for two years, but, I taught myself C++ for 6 months and then found a job. I've been programming for 12 years now. However, given that you're 15, I'd imagine you need to hide your age from people you work for. I'd agree with Pete, Rentacoder is a good place to find some work, do some jobs, and then use the work you've done to create a resume for yourself to look for 'real' work. When I started, I worked contract and I worked twice the hours I charged for, b/c I had a lot to learn. you could use RAC as a way to find real world tasks, and learn what you need to know to do them.

You could always try rentacoder. You seem to be about the right age for it. The money won't be great, but at least you would be making some money.

Honestly I'd suggest looking for a popular OSS project (eg web portal in a box) that has setup/appearance tweaking requirements a bit above/beyond what a base level luser can do instead. One of my former coworkers made decent money moonlighting that way after establishing himself as clueful on the products support board. Learning the platform will have a relatively high upfront time charge; but the end result will be pay that beats the standard minimum wage teenage job.

Have you considered mobile development? ie... Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile etc.. If you are teaching yourself then you should be able to learn those as well. All you need is a good idea, a device to test on and run with it. I'd start with Android. Google account will deposit directly into a ban account or on a card, cost is 25 dollars to get set up. Pay the 25, Google takes 30% of what you sell. Eclipse is the IDE to use, plugins and Eclipse are free and can run on Windows, Mac and I think on Linux as well. iPhone , you need a Mac to develop on, costs is $100 a year(pay up front). Apple takes 30% of what you sell as well. Blackberry, any OS will do( Eclipse has the plugins for it) cost is $200 to publish 10 apps, paid up front. Not sure i they take a % or not. Windows, You can do with Visual Studio of course. 100 up front plus their 30%
Programming is a race between programmers trying to build bigger and better idiot proof programs, and the universe trying to build bigger and better idiots, so far... the universe is winning. Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow.
