I have not bought it. I know they claim there's lots of cool new stuff, but I assume they are lion about it.

Anyone else installed it yet? Opinions? [edit: glad to see Microsoft isn't the only one who is hopeless at estimating time of installation. I mean, it's not like apple controls the software and hardware completely and has an extremely limited set of variables on which to base it's install estimations, or anything. An hour after it said 33 mns and I have 12 mins to go before the joys of OSX OcelotLion] [Edit 2: It's done. And it looks exactly the same. Exactly. I wouldn't know it was a different OS except I now have a FaceTime app in the docking bar and, wonders of wonders - I can resize a window using...wait for it!...any side of the window. They were up all night thinking about that one. Well done Apple. In all seriousness I'm looking forward to seeing the changes, but to put it in perspective this is not even close to the changes between, say, XP SP1 and XP SP2, so I think the $30 is like paying for grocery bags at the supermarket - it's not onerous, but it's not fully justified.] [Another edit: They reversed the direction you need to stroke the trackpad to scroll. Slide up to scroll down, stroke down to scroll up. Hmmm.

Hey Chris, do you use XCode? I've heard that some people are having trouble with XCode (4.1) after upgrading to Lion and XCode 4.1. I think I'll wait till I hear everyone saying how great the upgrade is. In any case - thanks for sharing your experiences. Interesting that it didn't make much of an impression. Reading Apple PR on this, you'd think that every other OS was rendered obsolete with the arrival of Lion.

I have been using the beta/developer preview version for a long time. There is nothing I dislike about it. It is definitely worth the $29 or so. Plus the nice thing is that I can update all my Mac machines - 3 of them with only $29.
I've yet to download it but what other machine would give you an upgrade for £29 and from what I understand, the same version is true for all; no variations for home, student, apprentice, January, dual-core, quad-core, Wednesday, 2005, 2008, 2011, SP3, late afternoon, which seems to dog Microsoft's somewhat different approach. Heck, if only VS ran on native iMac/OS (not using a VM) then I'd never go back to MS again. :-D Mate of mine at die kantoor did download it and spent an evening working through some of its features. He's a seasoned iMac user he's upbeat about it so far. As for me, I'm perhaps still seduced by the experience being new to the Apple game but I've a feeling we're going to be firm friends. Like you say, you can't bitch about the cost of it.

Just like if you dig deep enough you can find the new way to make the iPad keep it's aspect ratio when you rotate it. Apple seems like a sheltered workshop to me nowadays.

I was just reading a review[^] as I opened your message and amongst the enhancements they mention apart from the any-side resize and inverse-scrolling are the autosave and versioning for compatible applications, full screen apps and the download manager for safari.

Surely that counts as ironic, no?No... having spent far too much time thinking about this, natural scrolling indeed would bring stuff from further up the top into view when you scroll in a downward motion... think of a globe with the axis attached through the equator... when you scroll "down", the northern hemisphere comes towards the centre...

I'm too scared to update the machine in the office (the one we have XCode on) to Lion. I'm holding off until we get some updates from Apple.

I found the way to fix the reversal of the mouse gesture. You uncheck the "natural scrolling" checkbox in preferences. Surely that counts as ironic, no?

When I installed the update it clobbered my XCode 4. Where did git go? I can't even push out my changes and work on it from another computer. I don't even have patch or diff? Ok, I'll archive the stuff, copy it over the network and merge it in by hand. Wait, windows complains when it tries to open the .zip file!? Well at least I still have tar and gzip ... I can't find my local copy and the App store is so busy I just get an error message when I try to re-download it. Later when I click on 'Purchases' nothing happens. Finally I figure out that I can download it from the 'Featured' page. What, it's *free* now. It only takes 2 more hours to download and install... What did they do to Mail? Where did my scroll bars go? Wayne

You just have to remember that you're not moving the scroll bar anymore, you're moving the page.

I don't have to remember anything. I have to use it and it needs to work in a way I have been taught by the industry and in a way that I expect. Apple has gone from scroll wheel to scroll sphere to touch surface on their mice and the direction of movement has stayed consistent with their own products and those of the industry. Apple has also been the major player to bring touch screen gestures to the masses and has stayed consistent with what the industry uses. Apple have then tried to make the trackpad on laptops bridge the gap between scroll wheels and touch screens, and then extend the trackpad to the mouse, and therein lies the problem. If the industry decides this is the way we go we'll all get used to it. I personally feel they are stretching an analogy too far.
