Oslo bombings and massacre

One of the things that is quite clear to me is that any meme that has the ability to excite human passions will be embraced by a small number of defective humans who believe they have the right to execute those they disapprove of. I am quite sure that the large majority of Muslims in this world are law-abiding, peaceful humans, who simply want to live their lives, their way. I am equally sure the the great majority of Christians in this world are law-abiding, peaceful humans, who simply want to live their lives, their way. I believe that most progressives truly wish for a better world and are working to create it. I believe that most conservatives truly wish for a better world and are working to create it. I am positive that the average Chinese, Russian, America, Canadian, Persian, South African, Brazilian, etc. simply wants to create a better world for the next generation It is obvious that the are nut cases who embrace nationalism, or religion, or social justice, or personal responsibility and simply have to blame "the evil others" for all the sins of the world and an even smaller group of mentally and emotionally crippled quasi-people who act out on their paranoid fantasies fed by their embrace of one or another of the major memes in out lives. It is understandable, I believe, that the immediate reaction to any terrible massacre created by one of these defectives be an all embracing anger at them and anyone else that might be associated with them, even if that association was only in our own minds. I confess that my first reaction to 9/11 was a desire to see Afghanistan reduced to a nuclear wasteland. But a few moments of logical thought should make it clear that the assassins of 9/11 do not represent all Muslims, that Bill Ayers is not a mainstream progressive, that Anders Breivik is not a true Christian - indeed, you seem to have jumped the gun and most of what is known about him suggest he was a religionist about as much as I am - or a fair representation of a conservative viewpoint. logical thought, Dave; not prejudice, and not paranoia is what will keep us from all killing each other.

Terrorists have a stated agenda: Unified Ireland, Basque out of Spain, Yanks out of [enter your country here], etc. - or the killing and maiming will continue. This guy expressed concern that national identities were being lost to multiculturalism, but nowhere have they (yet?) found him supporting violence as a solution. So, he is not a terrorist, but a 'madman'.

Sounds like a good agenda :-)

I think what he did qualifies well to be called violence.

Um, yes. What I had hoped to express was that there were no threats of violence, in order to rid his country of multiculturism, in his posts (as far as has been determined). No agenda.

I figure that terrorism has a political purpose - it is the use of violence or threats of violence by one group to intimidate or coerce another group in order to achieve political ends. Recently our esteemed homeland security department has taken to broadening the term to include anyone who is motivated by anything not strictly personal and who commits or tries to commit violence whether there's a goal or not. Take your choice, I suppose.

Not much time has passed since the bombs went off in Oslo, and a guy dressed as a police office started massacring kids at a summer camp for youths involved in politics, so much of the information that has been published so far, may be totally wrong when the dust has settled. Many people are crying "It's a muslim terrorist attack". I did too, until some interesting information was published. 1) The guy disguised as a police officer at the summer camp, had the appearance of a native. Not the typical jihadist. 2) The summer camp was for left wing kids (social democrats). 3) Some witnesses claim that there was a "fake" police officer close by just before the bomb(s?) went off. I think these cowardly attack(s) were made by a Norwegian "Oklahoma bomber(s?)".

According to Norwegian, no death-penalty, law, the most he can be sentenced to is 21 years.

21 years! :wtf: Could a finding of insanity provide a longer sentence?

Oslo police chief of staff Roger Andresen told the San Francisco Chronicle that the maximum prison term Breivik could face is 21 years under Norwegian law - and that's because they have labeled what he did as terrorism. Presumably they believe that he'll be rehabilitated in 21 years.

If you can believe anything posted on the internet, there are many statements about 'containment' where, at the end of the 21 years, prisoners are assessed as to whether they remain a danger to society. If so they serve another 5 years. These 5 yearly sentences could be repeated ad mortem, I suppose.

So once more a religionist goes out and kills people. It just confirms my theory that religion is evil and should be banned.

Yep, however if a prisoner is sentenced to containment at the time of his trial, he can also be paroled after ten years, or any time thereafter. If he does serve his full term, another hearing in court must be conducted to sentence him to another 5 years, and so on. Norway also has the rather interesting habit of giving murders and other criminals unsupervised parole for weekends, etc. I would hope that the bleeding hearts withhold their feelings of fellowship with this guy.
