Any recomendations for a new laptop?

Hey, I'm looking to get a new laptop for developing on. Don't have a ton of money to spare right now (who does these days? ;) ), so I'm trying to find an affordable machine that can still handle the following all open at the same time without much slowdown: -up to 2 instances of vs 2010 -sql server management studio -photoshop cs3 -a few browser windows -ms outlook My desktop machine's pretty powerful, so running all of this at the same time wasn't an issue but I'm curious what you guys think my ballpark specs should be on a laptop to run all of this at once. Thanks.

Photoshop minimum requirement is 1GB ram, so figure 2GB just for that, plus 1GB each for the VS instances. I'd start with 4GB Ram as a minimum, and work up from that as the budget allows.

Even without photoshop I wouldn't consider less than 8GB.

My advice is to get something with a lot of RAM. This was already posted, but it's worth repeating. To a great extent, one can work around deficiencies in other areas; but once you run out of real memory and start using disk space instead ("virtual" memory), you will find that real work quickly becomes impractical. In terms of brand, I have always been partial to Acer. However, I have also noticed that people who are rough with their equipment (e.g. children and frequent business travellers) have less luck with Acers than I do.

I remember when the latest Cray could kick out a couple of MIPS and you could climb inside it. Rubbish - my mobile is more powerful. To be fair though, I think things have got faster over the last 25 years or so.

Whatever model you decide to get, make sure you have at least 8G of RAM and a 7200 rpm hard disk. I'm assuming you don't want to spring for an SSD due to the (much) higher price. /ravi

maybe not the most affordable(got mine with tax refund :-D ) but this one definitely has the horsepower. Running windows 7 ultimate with 8 gig ram and a 650 gig hd. I can and do run up to 5 vms at once, 2 visual studio and various word documents excel, etc... and rarely do I have any noticeable slowdown. It is a tad heavier than other lappies but hey, that big engine has to live somewhere and I'm a big guy so doesn't bother me. Windows Experience index of 5.9, and that only because of the hard drive all graphics are 6.0 and ram is 7.3, with processor at 7.1

I don't trust warranty services much anyway. never do buy the extended one. I'd rather eat the cost and fix my own machine so that I know its done right AND they don't "accidentally" erase my hard drive when they were just supposed to replace a different component. Yeah I have heard of many horror stories along those lines. My work and setup are more important to me in the long run than the money to fix something out of pocket, even if it is expensive and could be covered. And no I'm far far from being rich or even well off, I just have a higher value on my time than anything(3 kids, wife and a stupidly busy job leaves little room for BS..).
