    BBr3 surely?

I fear you are confusing the element Br, with the molecule Br3 (Br2 is, I believe, far more common.)

he's saying that BBr3 (boron tribromide) is a known common relatively stable molecule whereas BBr (or BrB) is not.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. That's why I couldn't get the punch-line. I guess it's hard to see past even a rudimentary science education - no problems for Oakman, though, I would say.

Thank you for volunteering to translate standard American speech. However, this is the third of these I have posted. In every case I have been talking about elements not molecules, indeed the first post was entitled "Its Elemental." You may have come in late, but a simple reread of the OP might have helped you realize that the reason I wrote "the bromine and the boron" was because I was talking about two separate substances, not a compound. Sorry for confusing you.

But putting the names of ellements close together like that implies a mollecule, although you had the metal after the non-metal, and your valency was shot to hell. :) I still dont get the joke though.

So if I say I left neon and xenon in the other room, you would assume I had discovered a new molecule? You may have inferred something that was not intended, but, again I repeat: this is the third post in a series which started with one called "It's elemental." In all three, the joke, such as it is, requires dealing with chemical symbol for an element not a compound. I don't see why you assumed this one was different from the others, but I apologize to you, too, if I somehow confused you.

brb is a common chatroom abbreviation for be right back. One thing I am sure of: any joke that needs explaining isn't very funny. :sigh: Oh well. Back to the drawing board. . .

You're welcome! the correct response to eric's post was "heh. yeah, good one." not posturing with facts you googled about bromine

Pointing out that your head is in a dark and smelly place amuses me. But having a battle of wits with an unarmed man is always unfair, so take the last word, I know how badly you need to.
