Don't you just love people that use file extensions?

Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. I also do Android Programming as I find it a refreshing break from the MS. "And they, since they Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs" -- Robert Frost

I hate that Windows tries not to let me see file extensions, as if my tiny little brain will not be able to cope with them.

      From here: http://today.yougov.co.uk/sites/today.yougov.co.uk/files/yougov_england_riot_results_pdf_pr.pdf[^]

      • 90% think the police should be able to use water cannons in the course of dealing with the rioters.
      • 33% say police should be able to use firearms / live ammunition.
      • 77% support using the army to help deal with the situation.
      • 57% feel David Cameron is dealing with the situation badly.
      • 85% believe either a majority or most of those taking part in the riots will go unpunished.

I'm disappointed that they didn't ask what percentage of people understand that "majority" and "most" are the same thing. (o/t: don't you love people that put the file extension in the filename, you know, in case you don't see the extension)

Someone where I work suggested bulls like they do in Pamplona. That'd clear the streets (or make a mess on them).

I do not know what UK laws say to this, but I am glad that here no military units may be used to do the police's work. Even if that may be practical now, it might one day also be misused, usually meaning nothing good for the country and for the people.

In the US, the National Guard(sub-branch of the Army) has been used in situations such as this, like the riots in Chicago in 1968. [^] [^] A friend of mine actually works with a guy that was one of the guardsmen deployed during one of the riots. He got stabbed in the leg by a rioter, so he turned and shot at him. He says he has no clue what happened to the guy...

Luckily, this is absolutely no question here in Germany, mostly for historical reasons. But such a situation which can only be resolved by sending in the army are also unthinkable here. And when I was in the military, I was glad that I would under no circumstances have to stand there and shoot at our own people.

Yeah, I can't think of any recent times when the National Guard was called in for a situation like that. A lot of the time the National Guard is used for things like reinforcing the banks of large rivers when there is flooding.

More recently in the Rodney King riots[^] ~4k National Guard Soldiers and Marines were sent to back up the LAPD. That lead to one major snafu[^] when the cops borrowed a few Marines while responding to a domestic dispute: Police officers responded to a domestic dispute, accompanied by Marines. They had just gone up to the door when two shotgun birdshot rounds were fired through the door, hitting the officers. One yelled “cover me!” to the Marines, who then laid down a heavy base of fire. The police officer had not meant “shoot” when he yelled “cover me” to the Marines. [He] meant point your weapons and be prepared to respond if necessary. However, the Marines responded instantly in the precise way they had been trained, where “cover me” means provide me with cover using firepower. Over two hundred bullets [were] fired into that house.” Edit: Fixed URL

Aid in an emergency situation or natural desasters is of course another thing. Usually the people are glad to be rescued by some soldiers in a boat or helicopter when they are sitting on the roof of their house after a flood.

Yes but last time I was in Germany the police were armed. Not for 'special' occasions such as these riots, but all the time. The carrying, and possible use, of firearms would be the only reason to call in The Army over here, your guys are already prepared for that.

Luckily, this is absolutely no question here in Germany, mostly for historical reasons. But such a situation which can only be resolved by sending in the army are also unthinkable here. And when I was in the military, I was glad that I would under no circumstances have to stand there and shoot at our own people.

Sad, but true. The days when at least the policemen in smaller towns could go on duty without weapons are over. They have them for self defense and can never know what to expect when they are called. 20 years ago, when we got East Germany back, I saw myself how easily you could trade some assault rifles from the Russians who were stll there at that time. Since then things appear to have become tougher for the police and by now they also try to be prepared for terrorism.

Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius

That's the tiny difference between policemen and soldiers.

Exactly that not, at least as this small part of the former first verse of our anthem is usually misunderstood.
