It's karma for all the "Why are you still using VB?" answers in Q&A.

It was broke, so I fixed it.

I finally moved to Windows 7 64 bit. As it took me a while, I felt I should keep automatic updates on. There seems to be a lot, every day. Last night, it did an update. This morning, my computer won't start. Awesome.

Why is it only you? I have a lot of machines I need to worry about and not a single one of them has failed on a Windows update. Everything from a dodgy freebie laptop that barely boots in under 30 mins to my main beast dev machine (plus our 2008 R2 servers which are close enough) Then again - you seem to have no problems with Mac OS yet it is is the scourge for me.

Installing it is easy. However, it would not be the first OS where a Microsoft update killed it completely, XP SP3 did that to me.

Well that is true, the Win7 SP1 update killed a machine of mine. And many others "out there" which I found out after I searched for a solution online. Thanks for reminding me... OK, I'm embarrassed now...

Hope you realize I was just kidding... Anyway, I seriously doubt you'll have much trouble installing win7. But, if you have win7 win SP1 slip streamed, that's what I'd install. Installing the SP1 update from Windows Update has been known to be a problem, but maybe not on a fresh install. Good luck.

In the past, I'd assume it was something else I installed, like music software, but this machine only has MS stuff on it, and the install is a week old. I don't know. I am far from an Apple fanboy, but OSX has never failed on me like Windows seems to love to do.

I have a surge protector, but I actually believe that is true. Our 'long life' bulbs typically last a few months. And the power costs more all the time, got another $1600 bill, would have been over $2k for the quarter if I'd not turned the pool off.

Your light bulb story seems similar to mine. I've had a couple of those CFL bulbs go up in smoke, literally. I can't think of any reason why this would happen other than crap power. It probably had something to do with the demise of 3 motherboards in my previous desktop too. Perhaps try a UPS or something else to clean up noise on the power lines? I think most surge protectors only kick in for big spikes, not generally poor line quality.

Well, all I installed was 'critical' updates, no driver updates. I have a Mac Pro, all the hardware in this thing is pretty decent, there's no $20 sound cards or anything.

It's hydro power. And yet we're going to have to pay carbon tax on top soon, too.
