Aha - that was the first mistake was letting windows install updates..... Anyway, whenever I build a machine or VM, I install Windows, then I grab all the drivers I need, THEN I turn on and do Windows updates on custom until there are no more. Just keep doing it over and over and over again. Which is another stupid thing about Windows update - why can't I just tell it to run and keep running until it finds no more updates (i.e. past all reboots and rechecking after each batch of updates is installed)????
Yeah, the whole 'I have 9 updates', followed by 'wait, I found 4 more' is a bit stupid. On the other hand, I installed Boot Camp 3.0 ( Apple software ), and it updated to 3.1, which was 250 MB, and THEN told me I need 3.2, immediately. Another 150 MB. This counts to me, I do not have endless bandwidth.

It got there in the end. I do like Weven, it's way better than Vista. Having my XP drive with my code on it has caused issues, I don't have access to the document folders in XP, I have to reboot to XP. Also, I can't build anything without changing it so I have full access to the files. The security stuff is still a little nuts. But, it's pretty, and it works. Today, I will actually work on the project that has the build issues, so we'll see if going 64 bit and being able to access more RAM will fix that for me.....

You should just need to bash the paths with requests for full rights. By default your account can't snoop in any other accounts userspace (although with admin rights you should be able to add your self to the ACLs for the cost of a few UAC clicks).

I finally moved to Windows 7 64 bit. As it took me a while, I felt I should keep automatic updates on. There seems to be a lot, every day. Last night, it did an update. This morning, my computer won't start. Awesome.

I thought you kept these off because Telestra raped you for the crime of using more than few hundred megabytes of bandwidth in any given month.

Well, all I installed was 'critical' updates, no driver updates. I have a Mac Pro, all the hardware in this thing is pretty decent, there's no $20 sound cards or anything.

Of course not, they'd charge you at least $100 for it, even if it was normally $20! (sorry, couldn't resist) But in all seriousness, that doesn't rule out a hardware problem, even good hardware has a few lemons, and they aren't always immediately apparent. And since the software on the machine isn't likely to magically start working again, a hardware issue sounds more likely, especially during boot.

Are you using Windows 7 on your Mac ? because I always update Windows on every Tuesday and never had any problems. I am thinking it's the bootcamp causing the problem, might be some driver issues...

It's karma for all the "Why are you still using VB?" answers in Q&A.

Well, I guess it's always easy to blame that, but, Boot Camp is pretty transparent. Once I get to the 'Windows is loading' screen, as I did, the computer has no idea that it's running under Bootcamp, or on a Mac.

Why is it only you? I have a lot of machines I need to worry about and not a single one of them has failed on a Windows update. Everything from a dodgy freebie laptop that barely boots in under 30 mins to my main beast dev machine (plus our 2008 R2 servers which are close enough) Then again - you seem to have no problems with Mac OS yet it is is the scourge for me.

Installing it is easy. However, it would not be the first OS where a Microsoft update killed it completely, XP SP3 did that to me.

Well that is true, the Win7 SP1 update killed a machine of mine. And many others "out there" which I found out after I searched for a solution online. Thanks for reminding me... OK, I'm embarrassed now...

Hope you realize I was just kidding... Anyway, I seriously doubt you'll have much trouble installing win7. But, if you have win7 win SP1 slip streamed, that's what I'd install. Installing the SP1 update from Windows Update has been known to be a problem, but maybe not on a fresh install. Good luck.

In the past, I'd assume it was something else I installed, like music software, but this machine only has MS stuff on it, and the install is a week old. I don't know. I am far from an Apple fanboy, but OSX has never failed on me like Windows seems to love to do.

I have a surge protector, but I actually believe that is true. Our 'long life' bulbs typically last a few months. And the power costs more all the time, got another $1600 bill, would have been over $2k for the quarter if I'd not turned the pool off.

Your light bulb story seems similar to mine. I've had a couple of those CFL bulbs go up in smoke, literally. I can't think of any reason why this would happen other than crap power. It probably had something to do with the demise of 3 motherboards in my previous desktop too. Perhaps try a UPS or something else to clean up noise on the power lines? I think most surge protectors only kick in for big spikes, not generally poor line quality.

It's hydro power. And yet we're going to have to pay carbon tax on top soon, too.
