I am conducting a little survey about different free e-mail providers. I will be TA'ing a C++ course this spring semester and I am looking to set up an account that the students in the course at Iowa State University[^] can contact me at. I would prefer that the service allows students to send me small attachments if they are having problems with their code. What is the best UI you have seen on the web, aside from someone special giving me a nickp@codeproject.com e-mail address? ;P

I will issue one word of caution about free e-mail provides... if anything happens to your account, you are pretty much screwed. I had a friend who got hacked, and now he is completely shut out of his account. But surely Iowa State gives you an e-mail address, right? Or are you simply trying to separate the class stuff from other e-mail? Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I have used lycos.com from the time it started. Never gave problems; get very little spam, and has 7 MB space, if I remeber right. My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers

Exactly, I have an ISU e-mail account, and I can actually set up folders on the account. However it would be easier to just have a separate e-mail account altogether.

I use yahoo mail and have had very few problems. I get 6mb of free space (they may have lowered it for new accounts) and can buy 25mb for $29 per year. The interface has been improved lately, but generally works very well. I have also used hotmail but the SPAM was just too much, though the UI was nicer.

I've had a Yahoo account for many years. It's always been great and I have 6mb storage. My wife has a Hotmail account - it has 2mb storage and she has had trouble now and then with access. Netscape's free e-mail isn't too bad either. Mike Mullikin

I highly recomend MyRealBox.com[^]. They are a free IMAP provider (linked with Novell i think). I have had an account there for about 2 years now and it has only gone down twice in that time. I can use the web interface or Outlook / OE to log in.

I've been using netscape.net 5MB of space, free POP3 access. I'm a little wary that the POP3 access will end sometime (since most other free email providers have dropped it), but they haven't yet and I've been using their email for over a year now. ------------------------------------------ "Isn't it funny how people say they'll never grow up to be their parents, then one day they look in the mirror and they're moving aircraft carriers into the Gulf region?" - The Onion
