Guys This is unbelievable. I think it's just about impossible to find an affordable apartment in Mountain View :-( I just put up this Ad on CraigsList. Can someone give me any suggestions to improve my ad?
_I am looking for a Studio Apartment in Mountain View. The maximum rent I can afford is USD 600 (if lesser, the better). I cannot afford a security deposit but I am prepared to pay 50% of the first month's rent as advance. Essentially I'd like to have a clean Studio (with heater) , a clean bathroom and a tiny kitchen (with at least a refrigerator and a cooking range) It should also be less than a mile from castro street/villa street cross-roads. I don't have a car right now, but I hope parking facility is also available as I intend to buy a car in the near future. I am a Software Engineer (25 yr old male) who landed here only a month ago and I expect to be here for a minimum of two years. If I do move in, it'd probably be around January 2nd week. I don't keep pets, and don't smoke. I do not intend to share the apartment with anyone in future. Thanks_
Regards, Nish

Hi Nish, Having lived in the Bay Area (my mother still lives in Palo Alto), $600 is, unfortunately, unrealistic. She's on holiday too, but she works at O'Conner hospital and knows a bunch of people. I'll ask her, but you're probably looking at a roommate situation (see below). I have a friend who used to be an apartment manager. When one of my coworkers moved from San Diego to Mountain View, he couldn't find an apartment. I contacted my friend and he amazingly had an apartment that was just becoming available. Two bedrooms, $2,000 / mo. Unfortunately, my friend is no longer in the apartment management business (this was about 5 years ago), otherwise I would have referred him to you as soon as I knew you were in the Bay Area. I sent an email to another fellow I know about maybe connecting up with you, but I haven't heard back from him yet. I suspect he went out of town for the holidays. Come to think of it, there's another fellow I could ask. I'll let you know. Anyways, I would suggest trying to find a room-mate situation. Finding a place all by yourself is next to impossible, I think. The other problem is that you're looking for a place in a really high rent district. The Castro St. area is prime real estate. Would you consider the commuter train? There's a station right at Castro St., I believe, and it can really broaden your range of possiblities--further south into San Jose is probably your best bet. BTW, didn't I read in some post ages ago "I smoke cigs"??? If true, did you quit? And if true, congratulations! If all of the above is false, well, ignore me! Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

Unfortunately, you may find apartments only in that range. Try to look for another person to share a bigger apartment. Say, a 2 room for 1200-1300. My article on a reference-counted smart pointer that supports polymorphic objects and raw pointers

(oops, I didn't mean to bold the whole thing). Some comments about your ad. Studio apartment desired by a 25 year old male software engineer. Preferable in the Mountain View area near major bus routes. Non-smoker, no pets, desired move in date is the 2nd week of January. Can afford $600 / mo. Expecting to rent for minimum of 2 years. Short and sweet. Even if it isn't in the right area, you can ask anyone who calls if they know other people you could contact. Most people want first, last, AND a security deposit. Drop the line about "I cannot afford" completely and negotiate a payment plan in person or on the phone. It's easier to sell yourself that way. Probably replace the entire second line "Essentially...". You already said you're looking for a Studio apartment. It will of course come with heat, and the kitchen will include a range. By it's nature, it should also include a refrigerator, but you can ask that when you get a nibble. And it's expected to be clean. I know, you never can tell, but you do have the right to inspect it! Drop the distance limit. Instead, say "preferable to be near major bus routes". Drop the whole thing about parking facilities. You can ask that on the phone. Most of the parking is either street parking or there's designated parking for renters in many complexes. This is usually not an issue. Umm, I hate to say this, but I'd also drop the part about "landed", but keep the part about expected time frame. Good Luck! Marc Help! What's really weird is people are offering a single room and a shared bath for 750/month!!! The whole apartment is prolly only 1100 and they are charging 70% of the cost for 40% of the apartment! Weird!!! Nish

Yes, the psychological addiction is much stronger than the physical one. Having moved to another country (wow, I still am amazed at that), all the old patterns are pretty much broken.
