When my company needed to translate our software into Italian we went to a local university and advertised for an Italian student. He did the job admirably. He also turned out to be far more intelligent than most of us working there and I believe is now in the senior management of the company. But I guess that doesn't help much.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

    Thanks for the info!

Short version: assume you need to translate the UI of the software your company builds in more languages (French, German, Italian, whatever), what would you type in Google? What search refinements would you do, if any, after the first query? Long version: we're in the software localization industry and we're trying to refine our website for better targeting search engines, so knowing what people search for is very important. If you're kind enough to answer me, then I owe you a hug. :-D So far I've been getting pretty much always the same answers, which is both comforting and frightening because it means we're on the right track but competition is fierce... I hope this request does not upset anyone here. Thanks!

So you are basically trying to find someone translating your stuff, is that correct ? Why don't you try your luck here on CP ? I am sure you would get a lot of people interested in helping you against a few € (or $), and the translation would certainly be really accurate.

Not exactly. My company offers such services, and I'd like to know what would you search for to find them. ;)

Oookaaayyy. Sorry, slow day today. Then additionally to GParkings' post ( which now makes sense to me as well, all of a sudden :-\ ) translating UI [source][target] translating strings code [source][target] or the strings directly with the two languages, so I presume you would need to have all "common" strings as search keywords as well. On a side note, I'd be really interesting about your strategy to improve search targeting ! This is something I could need myself :)

Well, I decided to become the world's greatest SEO expert. :-D Very long journey... anyway, the point is that, once you know the juicy keywords, it's pretty easy to optimize your website. The hard part is knowing the right keywords, and my problem is that I'm too biased to come up with keywords that people are searching for. This thread demonstrates it.

Mmmh.. My problem is that the keywords people would use are pretty common (for instance for a real estate web site, you won't come out of the "sell buy house flat" aso...) so every website has the same registered keywords. And as you said, competition is fierce :)

That's pretty normal. You need to build links pointing to your website to better rank in search results. Hint: links whose text contains the keyword(s) are better than those simply mentioning the product name.

I'd start out with "technical translations". Not because that's necessarily what it is, but because I can't think of anything closer.

Just like that old Carly Simon song... "You're so funny, You probably think this joke is about you" My Mu[sic] My Films My Windows Programs, etc.
