Gun smoke is created as a result of both the chemical composition of gun power from that era, and the burning off of various gun cleaning/lubrication checmicals due to extreme heat caused by the discharge of the weapon. Powder nowadays is smokeless, and advances in cleaning solvents and oils somewhat inhibits the production of resulting smoke/vapors, thus allowing faster follow-up shots.

Bless him! Their smiles are what make it worth all the effort! At his age, diaper consumption still hasn't peaked, take it from me. Hehe, Mattie is now 10mo and he doesn't crawl so much as staged rolls on to his bum, quite ingenious and lazy! :D
