Resigning!
-
Well it is about the time! After a couple of months living in the code of shame I decided to resign! Today's email from the IT manager left me speechless! When a job of your dreams (programming) get's to be the worst nightmare, it is about the time to change. I feel like I lost all of my self confidence and the confidence in my knowledge, and I need to rebuild all this up! Any suggestion? I was trying in many ways to get out of this situation and as last thing I asked my manager for a 5 days training and preparation for getting the MCTS later the MCPD, I got the following answer:
"There are sufficient online resources that provide basic level training, just try: Google-> "WebPart Tutorial" (I'm feeling lucky), brings a nice tutorial for this."
I agree, it is not a rocket science, and nothing that I could not do with a self study, but it was an action done in order to stimulate the environment, but I did not expected an answer as this! I lost so much energy trying to change things in here that I didn't yet finished two very nice and curios article for CP that I have in the pipe. Am I wrong in my decisions? P.S. Can somebody explain me what the WebPart Tutorial has to do with exams 70-573 and 70-576 and general knowledge on Sharepoint? -

The guy is a moron, and certainly not a diplomat. If there is a problem with training, he would have been better to sit you down and explain that whilst he understood some training would be desirable, there were budgetary constraints that limited options... Or something like that, far more professional.

I don't know your level and seniority, because it impacts the leverage you will have, but let your line manager know you are unhappy and why. Then let his line manager know so that it is clear action must be taken by them providing a better role or by you getting a new job. Don't sit and brood, get up and get busy.

To be honest I was just "testing the waters" and got an answer. Sooner I leave, sooner I'll be happy again!

Being unhappy in your job is never good, and rarely gets better without a move. My last place I got so miserable that when I found myself in hospital at 3 in the morning and they confirmed I needed my appendix removed I smiled because I knew I would get at least three weeks off work. As Nagy says though, jumping without a good place to land is very risky.

Yes. Stop being a prima-donna, and learn on your own. If your employer won't pay for training, and you really feel the need to get that training, then go on your own dime. It's called "investing in your own career". I'm really kinda tired of everyone feeling entitled to free stuff.

Well that is my situation right now. And it is the first time for me, after 7 years working (here only 4 months) that I feel really miserable at my job. However I'm not taking the risk and I already have 4 interviews next week. The fact is that I'm for the first time a bit insecure, so I was asking from your experience, how to rebuild up the confidence quickly?

"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997Why I kinda agree with you (I'd personally be inclined to self-study a new subject rather than jump into some 5-day training snorefest), it's also called "investing in your employees". It's often cheaper to train your current employees than to fire them and hire new ones.

I spent nearly 6 and a half years there, and things got worse and worse over the last couple of years before becoming almost intolerable for the last 9 months perhaps. Changes in management, direction, lack of support from above where my main problems. In the end it was a chance (almost) encounter that got me the move out of there, although I had just started talking to a recruitment agent I knew and trusted when that happened. I was working 5 minutes from my house, which is not an easy thing to give up. I moved to somewhere where I liked the people (I had worked with one of them before, and I think that helped me a lot), I liked the work I was doing, but crucially the support from the manager was superb. I felt that he would back me in anything I wanted to do, any decision I made, as long as I could justify it as he often had to then justify it to someone else. The biggest thing though was just to be away from the old place and smiling again, it makes a massive difference and is almost instant.

Yes, I think a company has a vested interest in maintaining their employees' level of training, but if they don't, acquire the trainign on your own, and THEN change jobs. Afterall, the advanced training will make you that much more marketable in subsequent job searches. Once you acquire said training, give your current employer a chance to give you a raise to compensate, and if they don't, search out other employment. BTW, "fishing" is a waste of your bosses' time (and it sounds like you knew what the answer would be before you got it). The better way to handle it would have been to GET that training and then hit them up.

What would they be paying for? A college degree? What exactly do you want them to pay for? Why are you concerned about certs anyways? As John said, learn on your own dime...you have to be proactive here if you are going to make it in this profession.

I'm not arguing that point. I'm saying he if he requested compensation and didn't get it, he should still pursue the training on his own dime.

"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997I see your point John, and I certainly agree on some of these points, but this was not an must do request, I was just trying to confirm the management's attitude. This is a really disappointing software company and if this was the only problem, I would be ashamed to write about it. I am still quite young and inexperienced, but I really feel miserable and I invested a way to much energy already in here. That was only one example on how are usually replays from the management. Any I was expecting a bit of psychological support from my virtual colleagues from CP! :) However even your point of view is constructive so it is also welcome. Cheers!

I'm just trying to think if there was a Chris Elston at my last place... I had the exact same. The job started okay, but got progressively worse as opportunities were blocked and visionary management was replaced by ESN arse-lickers.

Were both of you working in my current company in the past? I need to add that even technically we are in the Neolithic and not prone to changes and improvements. As I specified before I'm kind of maintaining an app that I can for entire upload to the hall of shame section. Frustrations to the max! I think that next week 4 interesting interviews and a nice new article on CP will raise a bit my moral! And maybe I can try a legal (at least here in Amsterdam) "medical" treatment in order to meet the good spirits! :) Cheers
