If not rent a coder then where? [modified]

We constantly get companies asking us to make custom software or utilities for them using our product's free .net API and we just don't have time or resources. People are usually asking for little utilities to shuttle data back and forth, simple stuff that they will happily pay for and I've done a lot of it in the past, simple and easy and lucrative. Problem is these aren't *jobs* or long term contracts, they're weekend type stuff in most cases so it's not falling in the category of stuff that companies would pay a lot of money to find a .net developer with spare time to do it. Support is asking me where to send them and I hesitate to say rent-a-coder. I don't know where the best place is to send these people for this kind of work. Any suggestions? [edit] Please don't ask me about the specifics, Chris does not allow it here even under this scenario where we don't make any money on it, I already asked. I'm just looking for a site to send people to.

How about here? Maybe we could get Chris to set up a new forum for Utility requests, where these customers can post their needs, and members can contact them directly. It might be that a lot of these requests would be interesting and appealing enough that some foks would do them just for the exercise.

Send them to me. I would kill to have the chance to do this. Not kill, maybe maim though. I have trouble finding decent small project or contract work that doesn't pay like $100 for a weeks worth of work.

I brought up this issue with Chris a few years ago and he insisted that it was commercial and required that our company pay for advertising if we wanted to do it here even though we don't make a cent off it and I thought it was beneficial to people here so unless something has changed.... :)

You could always just browse through profiles and signature lines on CP and see if any one has any blatant advertising. There is also Craig's List but that is more trouble than it is worth. I have almost given up using it as a tool.

:) Craig's list for development jobs? Never thought of that. We use it all the time at home for selling and buying stuff around the house, works great for that.

When I was freelancing, I looked at oDesk, and it seemed an overall better setup than Rent-a-Coder. Maybe just check it out yourself and see.

Assuming you haven't alienated all previous programmers who used to work there, refer the customer to an ex-employee. Alternatively, put together an SDK for your product, and then give the SDK (free) to programmers that you pre-qualify via a brief interview, and checking a few references. Obviously, if you give your customer any referrals, you must support the programmer, since you don't want to end up with an angry customer. This whole situation could be used to gain new sales through these 'affiliate' programmers, who would be motivated to do a good job, and bring in new sales - maybe getting a commission.

We already have a free, documented API publicly available, it's included with the software when it's installed (just not the docs) and it works completely with the trial version which has no time limit and we have a dedicated support forum (also free) for api issues so there is zero barrier to entry. I pushed it as a major priority Win/Win and all that.

Why not pay for a one off add here to see if you can get some responses, I have no idea what that would cost though. Personally I'd start by canvassing some of the names here and see if they are interested in putting up a support site, utilities for ??? product. Problem is you may end up with 15,000 juniors who will take more of your time than you are willing to spend. If you got 5-6 decent coders who are willing to accept titbits like this then it would be a win. If CM needs to be paid then there should be some sort of arrangement.

ahhhh so CP is happy to take the input of programmers for content and thus increases CP's net worth, but not happy to assist them them to make some money out of it UNLESS CP clips the ticket along the way. Bryce (dancing along a line)
