Why Visual Studio does NOT suck today

Because it is not Eclipse! I had to use Eclipse for just a couple of days and I now have nothing but good things to say about VS.

I've used Eclipse, I did a lot of Java dev, but found it as much fun us Luton. For Java I prefer Netbeans, still not as polished as VS, but better than, and crucially not, Eclipse.

MyEclipse is a fully loaded enviorment for Java. To sum up, VS is the best development IDE for .NET (Windows Tech) and so Eclipse/MyEclipse/Netbeans is for Java.

VS is the best Development environment for the .Net development. And good thing is, it is getting better and better....

Five minutes with Xcode you realise that for all its flaws, Visual Studio is a superb development environment.

Eclipse constantly is in the wrong show, wailing about errors which don't exist or overlooking existing errors and pretending everything is well. That thing never quite knows what's going on. Instead of informing me, it takes occupies my time by constantly having to perform updating/compiling rituals until Eclipse at least temporarily has a clue again. Eclipse is a waste of time and productivity and I would not recommend it to edit a simple batch file, much less some larger project. But my bosses are hellbent on using Java and Eclipse for everything, so I just play along. In the end it's their money they are wasting. But the progress I make on my own projects over a weekend is overwelming when compared to fumbling around with Eclipse all week long.

This happened few weeks ago. Manager : So the problem is in the server. It's written in Java, so you fix it, you know Java right? Me : Sure, Let me install NetBeans. I remember carrying it in my Portable. Manager : Why? Everybody in Java dept. uses Eclipse. Me : Sir, you do remember that I take Java test during recruitment right? Manager : Yeah. Me : Do you remember my reason for accepting this position on .Net dept. despite having zero knowledge in .Net? Manager : Hm, Was it because their coding style, or some Java garbage collector? Me : The problem lies deeper than that. Manager : Yeah, how long does it takes to install that IDE?
Excuse me for my improper grammar and typos. It's because English is my primary language, not my first language. My first languages are C# and Java. VB, ASP, JS, PHP and SQL are my second language. Indonesian came as my third language. My fourth language? I'm still creating it, I'll let you know when it's done! :-D

"Shut up, Yoda, and just make yourself another toast." - Obi Wan KenobiI used Eclipse for Java and some C++ development for a number of years and was more than happy with it. Mind you, coming from vi and emacs I was easily impressed. I tried NetBeans on a number of occasions but never found it easy or intuitive. For Windows development I use the Visual Express editions (used the PRO version in my last employ) and have never had any serious problems with any of them.

Eclipse is easily confused when changes to the source code are made externally, be it your version control or be it that some framework like Spring constantly generates or changes sources. By my estimate I waste about a quarter of my time every day to bring Eclipse to reason again.

If it was just 5 minutes with XCode I could cope... Fortunately it tends to be about a week or two at most for me before I can go back to a proper IDE.

Have you ever tried Borland C++ Builder? Pile-o-stinky poo it is. I will worship Visual Studio forever as long as I don't have to write one line of code in that product again. I believe Embarcadaro owns the product now but it still sucks just as bad.

And it came worse.Try WPF in VS2010. After the 3rd restart of VS because of OutOfMemoryException which is resulted by the extreme efficiency of MS devs NOT releasing GDI resources you will go back to editing batch files by hand if need be.

Another soul destroying one to work with is SQL Developer - five minutes with that (which isn't even long enough for the interface to load) and you'll fall in love with SQL Management Studio.

I have a larger WPF application and also have my differences with the WPF designer, but I was not plagued by this bug. But this must depend a little on what you do, I guess.

I don't do .NET development, and I think VS is the best for native language based development as well.
