and my shirt keeps coming untucked. Bearing in mind I am skint should I; a) eat more to try to put the weight back on that I have lost b) attempt to puncture another hole in my belt c) buy a smaller belt d) buy smaller trousers e) get some braces (can you still buy these or do you have to rob an old person?) f) just give up on the trousers

There's only one answer. BACON - and lots of it.

And if you eat so much BACON your throat gets dry, just add gin!

I did the Atkins a number of years ago. Bacon and gin were both good to go on that, so I cannot see how this is going to help me fill out my trousers again. I tended not to eat that much bacon whilst actually on the diet, pork chops on the other hand, usually with a poached egg atop. What a wonderful breakfast.

                        b) is clearly the sensible man's answer. c) may also be a good bet depending on the availability of quality belt vendors in your parts (we have a market stall that sells some quite cheap). You should do d) if the trousers are much too big and shuck up around the belt, but you still need b) or c) if your weight is still changing.

Congratulations on losing weight! Definitely go with the smaller belt and trousers. I assume this is intentional, given your stated weight of 19½ stone?

Not really any concerted effort, I'm just being healthier generally. Over the last 5 years I have stopped playing any sports, due to a variety of factors, and my life became more sedentary. The weight slowly went on, I was previously around 17½ which may still sound like a lot, but I am 6'3", very heavily built, and was reasonably fit so it was not too too much for me to carry. In May of this year I took on an allotment, and that has been the source of much of the weight loss, the work on preparing and maintaining that, as well as eating a bit healthier with more and different vegetables cheaply and conveniently at hand. Although to be fair, I have always eaten fairly healthily, I just eat too much of it. Now the weight is coming off, I shall hopefully be able to make the effort to ensure it continues to do so over the winter with less daily watering required. At times in the summer I was walking a hundred yards to the water source, then back again with ten litres of water in each hand up to 30 times a day. That definitely helped.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

I understand. Like most guys, the men in my family tend to steadily gain excess weight as they grow older. My younger brother weighs about the same as you. My uncle weighs over 300 pounds, which is a significant factor in his long-term health problems. My weight has hovered around 210 pounds for the last several years, but I have to work pretty hard to keep it even that low. I run 16-20 miles a week, lift weights twice a week, and during the warm weather, bicycle fairly often. From my experience, you're going about it the right way. A considered adjustment in lifestyle, rather than a fad diet or exercise program, always seems to be more effective. One of the observations I've made about myself, though, might help your choice. When I've purchased bigger pants, my waist got bigger to compensate. When I purchased pants that were a little snug, that was added incentive to keep things under control. Of course, your mileage may vary :-D.

Mate of mine, couple of years younger (I am 37 in a fortnight) weighs exactly the same now as he did when he was 16 - to the ounce. And he eats incredibly badly. He is was also proclaimed at a recent medical checkup to be the healthiest person the doctor had ever seen. Remarkably low resting heart rate, that sort of stuff. Basically just a freak of nature, the git. My parents were far more overweight than me until their early 50s, when the both did the Atkins and lost quite a few stone each, but also joined a gym. Now in their early 60s my dad swims about 80 lengths a day, and also does a far amount of gym work too. They have both kept the weight they lost off, and eat smaller portions now. Like myself, they have never been big eaters of unhealthy food, just ate far too much. As my waist has gotten bigger I haven't thrown away the clothes that have become too small. Hopefully as it continues to get smaller I shall throw away those that become too big.

1st = 14lb. You guys use the Imperial measurements, you might at least do it properly :-\
