I would believe it, most lions are cowards. Hyenas tend to get more of the kill from a hunt than the lions do, they harass them until they go away, and lions have learnt to fear man. The only man-eaters tend to be older males who do not have a harem to hunt for them and are to slow to go chasing their own prey, so risk hunting humans. Very few people are killed by lions in the wild, it is usually the other way round.

Almost all animals are cowards and will run away wherever possible. Mostly it is cornered animals who fight. Plus they only took some of the meat, and left most of it so the lions have no doubt learnt it is easier this way. Not sure that nicking someone else's food qualifies you as a hunter though,

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

I'd use the word 'thief' rather than a 'hunter'.

In a cat's book, successful stealing is better than successful hunting. And they are always trying to bring whatever they have got to a safe place to eat it there. Even your cat at home does it that way.

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
                And it came worse.

You’re correct, but there are some valuable exceptions. The rabbit will stand on front of a predator to be eaten in order to save its youngsters. Also some dogs would die to protect their owners. It was the last year when this dog fought a furious battle with a grown puma to save the life of a teenage boy.
