Actually this is true for most users. Average tablet/phone user fires up an app about 15 times and within a week the majority are never used again. I can only name a half a dozen which I use on a daily basis (Music and Navigation being two of those). Only one is a game and not a very graphical one either.

Depends if it is what you are thinking consciously or not. Some people may find out things about themselves they never knew on those sites. ;P

With introduction of windows 8 I have an opinion that the PC hardware will change. A time is coming when no more keyboards will be used. The desktops will vanish even the laptops might vanish. Apple with its tablets will enter the wider market of PC. Most hardware companies will change too and manufacture Ipad kind of PC. What is you view?
I only read newbie introductory dummy books.

Please, don't suggest dictation software. Ignoring the obvious drawback (it's total cr@p) can you imagine the problems: 1) The noise level as we all try to code. 2) The Non-PC comments it adds when we spot a problem...

That is one closed minded view you have there! Where I work people underwrite insurance policies and to be honest they would have a nightmare entering 4 or 5 pages of printed information through a touchscreen device. Personally I think there is at the moment only limited business advantage for these types of devices. The only real advantage they have is for the home user.

Have you ever tried to type more than a few sentences on a touch screen? It's horrible. You get no tactile feedback, so you can't tell whether your finger is in the middle of the key, on the edge of the key, or on the edge of the NEXT key. Touch screens are fine for surfing the web and typing the occasional URL or e-mail address, but they can't replace a physical keyboard for serious writing or coding. Not unless haptic feedback technologies take a HUGE leap forward.

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)At the end of the 1970s and early 1980s sensor buttons and membrane keyboards were 'in'. Almost every electronic device had some. My old Atari 400 even has such a membrane keyboard. It's totally unusable for the exact reasons you state. Back then normal buttons and keys returned quickly after the novelty of sensor buttons had worn off. Looks like the things stay the same the more they change. Atari 400[^]

For your example, a voice/machine interface would be faster. Imagine just reading off the numbers:
1-7-2 next 4-5-0-0-0 next 4-0-5-point-7-6 next-line! Zooming.

Yes, and now immagine a whole office full of people merrily reciting the letters, source code, tables and whatever else they might be dictating at the moment :) I played around with IBM Voice Control more than 10 years ago. It worked, but it sure was not faster than someone who really can type. What about special characters or languages using many special characters like French? And, at least for me, it felt somewhat silly to sit in an empty room and talk into the air.

Agreed, but what about some sort of direct USB link to your brain? Other than the obvious need of having a device driver on the PC filter out certain anatomically diverse words that occur at regular, frequent intervals.

There was some editorial a while ago expressing that view. I think you're right, quite frankly. Most people don't need a keyboard other than to post on facebook, twitter, or send some email. Watching the folks that come over (I'm one of the few people that has Internet access around here, and offering tea and sometimes dinner also has its benefits) there's a lot of mouse clicking and very little actual typing. For the typing, a simple foldout bluetooth keyboard for a pad would meet their needs quite well. As an example, I was going over a thesis paper (The Purpose of Education) a friend wrote. We spent several hours sitting on the couch, discussing the paper, which we were viewing on my Galaxy Tab. Much more comfortable and frankly a far better user interface. Take a page from Star Trek. You don't see keyboards on the bridge of the Enterprise, do you? Marc

I want my food replicator! :) The control consol has some type of finger operated input device. Or at least appears to when they are setting a coarse, targeting ect. Maybe more correctly in order support more touch enabled devices like the tricorder (sp?) the whole concept for a UI needs to be re-thought out. Then again, things like the tricorder where designed and distributed by ‘star fleet’ so having complete control over the device does help insure it would have a functional UI (okay at least enough for TV). :)
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.
