Nor is he my idol, however I have to give him props for what he started when his company, Apple released the iPhone - they were the first to produce a phone like that, hence the "revolutionized" part of my statement. It is not a platitude - I firmly believe it was because of his vision and drive that the phones are what they are today. It is just an opinion. ________ John Y. Developer

Should have said it up front then. As for 'nothing like it before', I call BS. Touch screen phones pre-date the iPhone by a couple of years. Apple DID improve the UX, but they didn't invent anything new. They were not first to market, but bets to market. A company with superb marketing and, as you are evidence, the ability to tie in customers. Apple has one of the most closed down API's in the business. Everything that M$ has been criticised for over the years, Apple does as well. Jobs in himself was not a nice man. Go read up how he treated his daughter and how much he helped those less fortunate than him. Then come back and tell me he was great.

He revolutionized the mobile experience (why all the negativity?) I say a few nice things about a man who obviously had a huge impact on the world of IT, and it keeps getting downvoted. I thought the whole "One thing you can say about Steve is..." was to say something nice about a man who just died! ________ John Y. Developer

I purchased my first Sony Walkman in the early 80s - I would argue that the concept for the iPods (portable music player) could be traced back to these. Someone on the radio this morning said that Apple was more about style and packaging - although I will say that they were a front runner in the move to portable digital media.

One that doesn't suck? ;) Too many credit Apple with inventing when they "merely" take existing technology and make it usable. They didn't invent tablets, either, but it was an irrelevant market space until Apple came along. Of course I still don't understand the the desire for a tablet, but hey, you can't deny its success. They were also well behind the curve in releasing a portable MP3 player, but oh my god, how the usability for the pre-iPod generation sucked. Just getting something to organize my ******* music hierarchically was an amazing pain, or impossible (select artist, then an album by that artist, what a concept!). (Tangent: I used to have a remote controlled Netgear MP3 player hooked to my home theater, that used my PC as the music server. I still have nightmares about that 5 line LCD screen.) Having said all that, I have always said that had Apple won the PC war back in the 80's instead of Microsoft, that the antitrust issues against Apple would have made Microsoft's eventual legal troubles look like a speeding ticket. Of course it was Apple's closed nature that prevented them from "winning" in the first place, and we're seeing the exact same phenomenon on phones right now.

I totally agree. But for me ( a late bloomer to the apple fanboy community ), I started enjoying Apple products when I got my first iPhone. After that, the MacBook Pro, then an AppleTv, and finally , the iPad. (removed content due to potentially offending other users - I genuinely apologize if it did). ________ John Y. Developer

Apple is great at taking someone else's ideas and making the slick and marketable. They're not great at inventing new things. Even the personal computer was not invented by them as many assume. They were just the first to make it popular and more than just a hobby. Apple is great at marketing, but suck at inventiveness. They're still making the same business mistake they made back in the early 80's: they're closed. Everyone recognizes that the biggest business blunder of all time was not opening up and licensing the Apple OS to other hardware vendors. They're making the same mistakes today. And they're loosing again.

Hell, he revolutionized the computer experience! Having invented the personal computer with a graphical user interface and mouse after all. By the way, with the Altair, didn't Jobs really invent Windows and M$ just copied him (like it does everything else it produces) But hey, it was just code reuse...

I have read that it was Xerox that invented the graphic UI with the mouse.

They may well have pushed things forwards with the iPhone, but plenty of others were heading the same way already. And they have been overtaken in a great way since. However, it is the 'mobile experience' that gets to me, maybe it is a cultural thing, but I don't want a fucking mobile experience. It smacks of buzzword bingo, meaningless marketing bollox.

I didn't mean to sound like buzzwords, but I just thought was a good word to use. And, it was just my thoughts on the man - I did not intend it to start some debate PRO or CON Apple. And if I think about it, and quite literally - my mobile experienced was changed significantly after I purchased my iPhones. AND, if you look at the (in some ways better) smartphones out there now, it can be argued that the inspiration could have been from Apple. And I never said he invented ANYTHING. Just revolutionized if (even if all that took was some great marketing and branding skills). The man just passed away, and I thought it would be a nice thing to put out there. Thats all. ________ John Y. Developer

Almost nothing is *completely* new these days. But Apple has shown itself to be very innovative IMO. Tell me which phone prior to iPhone would you let you scale an image without having to press a Zoom-in button? They're primarily a Tech company not a marketing company...

In 2002 I bought a Sony Ericsson P800, I had a touchscreen (albeit with a stylus), a full internet browser (not just WAP), played MP3s and I could download apps and games for it. I had an app that used the infra red port and turned it into a universal remote control, that was great fun for changing TVs over in public places such as pubs. I also had Lemmings on it. I didn't downvote anything you put, and I think the downvoting you received was unfair, but don't apologise for what you put because people don't agree with it and don't change it to try to appease them.
