Weird things you do when you're coding?

When I'm coding in the comfort of my own home I have either 'The Simpsons' on or 'King of the Hill' in a loop - I've seen each episode many times but find the sound in the background helps my concentration. When I'm in a good run I also tend to put a double bass pedal under my desk so I can practice drumming while I work. Anyone else have any weird things you do when you're coding?

I taunt and yell at my screen based on how well things are going for me. You've actually stumbled upon a mechanism that allows you to keep your busy-bodied left brain busy, while your right brain takes over and does all of the thinking and problem solving. Sort of the same concept as fiddling with a pen or a paperclip in your hand while in a meeting, it's actually a way to help concentrate. I have always thought of that as fidgeting, but now that I understand it a bit more, I embrace things like that. It has made me much more productive. If you find this topic interesting, you would probably like Pragmatic Thinking and Learning[^] by Andy Hunt, he's one of the author's of The Pragmatic Programmer. That series in general is OK, but this book excellent.

when coding late night I turn on "second life", and leave my character at the night club dancing while I work. Part of "me" is working and the other part is clubbing :-O

At work I tend to rest my left hand on the desktop. When I have my headphones on that hand likes to play "air piano" along with the music I'm listening to. It's a good thing the guy on the other side of the cubicle 'wall' spends most of his time in meetings, otherwise he might get annoyed :-O, and I don't want to annoy Josh, The World's Tallest Program Manager™ (he's 6'10" and about 300 pounds).

I recently started doing parkour training, so I like to keep my eye on the clock and do 10 press-ups every half hour. Might get funny looks if I started doing that in an office.

Almost sounds like a phyical requirement for system admin / Desktop support. "It's a Monkey, it's an ape, it's the coffee guy.. NO! IT'S IT'S Rob the Desktop Guy.. Can bounce around from cubicle to a user's desk... it's Hardcore Parkour Programmer man!!" (fan fair) Would make an interesting youtube video. ^^ Sometimes I would do Tai chi at my desk as a way to think out a problem.

Classic Star Trek is the best when coding. Nothing beats Nomad exclaiming 'You are in error! You are imperfect!' when you have just compiled your project :) Of course not all the time and only when I work at home.

I just let my mind wander....with the browser... opening multiple websites...like Reddit...Facebook...News websites...and shit. My mind loves to wander when I am coding....and I let it wander without resistance...and it takes me to all sorts of places like....4Chan and all that... Just WoW I say.

Does drinking count? When I work from home I found that a beer or 2 help to relax me, and stop my mind from wondering. After a few hours of that though, the code stops making sense, but for some reason it works, and we never have to support it .... hmmmmm.
My plan is to live forever ... so far so good

For me, the most comfortable way to sit while coding is with my left leg on the table... ...unfortunately I can't do this while on-site: attracts too much attention It is exceptionally comfortable though, as my entire right arm is on the table too - kinda like having your elbow out the window while driving.
