Well at least there is a wall between you and "The World's Tallest Program Managerâ„¢". That gives you a little bit of time to react if you annoy him.

When I'm coding in the comfort of my own home I have either 'The Simpsons' on or 'King of the Hill' in a loop - I've seen each episode many times but find the sound in the background helps my concentration. When I'm in a good run I also tend to put a double bass pedal under my desk so I can practice drumming while I work. Anyone else have any weird things you do when you're coding?

Classic Star Trek is the best when coding. Nothing beats Nomad exclaiming 'You are in error! You are imperfect!' when you have just compiled your project :) Of course not all the time and only when I work at home.

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
      And it came worse.

I just let my mind wander....with the browser... opening multiple websites...like Reddit...Facebook...News websites...and shit. My mind loves to wander when I am coding....and I let it wander without resistance...and it takes me to all sorts of places like....4Chan and all that... Just WoW I say.

Does drinking count? When I work from home I found that a beer or 2 help to relax me, and stop my mind from wondering. After a few hours of that though, the code stops making sense, but for some reason it works, and we never have to support it .... hmmmmm.

My plan is to live forever ... so far so good

For me, the most comfortable way to sit while coding is with my left leg on the table... ...unfortunately I can't do this while on-site: attracts too much attention It is exceptionally comfortable though, as my entire right arm is on the table too - kinda like having your elbow out the window while driving.

Oh man... drinking + coding = frustrating. The only thing worse is coding while goofed. I can never remember what I was trying to build.

Interesting. How do you get the poor dog's head into the monitor? I hope it's not the brute force approach...

How's this for weird: I go into the office. :wtf: My current assignment has me working on a project alone, I could do it from a laptop at home, but I go into work because I can't concentrate at home. Maybe I should try the Simpsons trick. When I am browsing code or reading articles, I tend to use one of those hand-grip exercise things, or just twirl a pen around between my fingers of my idle hand. I also swear a lot at the computer. Damn thing. I started getting some annoyed looks from the boss's assistant in the next cube, so I now sometimes use the much quieter "flipping the bird". I am thinking of getting a web camera so the computer can see me doing it. :~

As a drummer myself, I high-five you for the twin pedal under the table. Tried it myself once, but it kept sliding away. I should build something to keep it in place, but I'm too lazy. :P

I work in a noisy office. When I am working on something like preparing for a meeting or planning one ( :| ) everything distracts me and I get annoyed. But when I am coding... all the noise around me disappears, magically. It must be weird for my coworkers because at those moments I completely ignore them and usually I participate in all the office gossip.

Anyone else have any weird things you do when you're coding?

crank the tunes to match the mood of the code. I have at times sent an email out to teammates letting them know that I plan to spend the day in the land of iPod. different moods of music to match the code that I am writing. if it has been something difficult and frustrating then it's going to be some bass pounding or hard rocking music.

Must. Have. Music. If I don't, part of my brain tries to generate some, so by putting on some music to listen to, I've freed up more of my brain for programming. I prefer instrumentals or Pink Floyd (which is almost instrumental), oh, and Supertramp's Breakfast in America[^], some of the tracks remind me of the front panel on the DEC PDP-8/I[^] that I learned to program on.
