Can This Hacker Really Fake Windows Update?[^] "In a statement on pastebin, he bragged that, "Microsoft's statement about Windows Update and that I can't issue such update is totally false! I already reversed ENTIRE windows update protocol, how it reads XMLs via SSL…You see? I'm so smart, sharp, dangerous, powerful, etc. huh?" We can hope that his hacking skills are as bad as his writing skills, but we shouldn't depend on it." Indeed. Bad news if this is true.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." - John Quincy Adams
You must accept one of two basic premises: Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not alone in the universe. And either way, the implications are staggering” - Wernher von Braun

Actually that's absolutely not true. Much of the reason these "haxors" do what they do is for the notoriety.

You may be correct. I've heard it theorized that the very people that sell us anti-virus software have a separate "secret" division creating the malware. Seems a bit far-fetched and paranoid to me, but planting such "marketing" stories is not beyond the pale.

Yeah, the end of the article dropped a not-so-subtle hint: "Whether or not he could do what he claims, you need very good malware protection, such as Trend Micro's Titanium." :wtf:

This will be not only stupid, but also cannot be kept in secret for a long time. I there is a “grey area” it will be more the other way around. The fucking “hackers” (may a chainsaw hack through their collective ass) creates a malware/virus and the sell the virus definition to the antivirus labs.

Hence the paranoid comment. I think we'd have heard of the sale of virus definitions if that had occurred.

Even if he does have the protocol, he (likely) does not have the private Microsoft key used for signing the packages. I think this might keep us safe for a while.

I am rather certain that absolutely no one is a genius at everything. Nor does high intelligence detract from negative traits. Thus someone who is that smart might also be arrogant enough to suppose that they are too smart to be caught by any legal entity.

I don't think they need to resort to actually creating any malware etc, they only need to publicise. They certainly have departments that do that very well.

theorized? at least one anti-malware company(HB gary) was recently proved to do just that.

The issue may pertain if it possible to hack, windows update site. I suppose not, as the SSL via XML and the certificate may be the issue. Is it possible to fake what a user sees through a windows update? Well, consider this do a little phishing, and change the windows update shortcut on the start menu? Possible? Might be a **spoiler** but not necessarily, it will take a little doing and ole script kiddies well at least give em a challenge...
