Mankind. The only species to start at the top and work its way downwards. Seven billion is not exactly a record to be proud of.

Why is it a sad day? The earth can sustain a _lot_ of people if resources are managed appropriately.

Was listening to a discussion on it earlier. 1 billion was in 1804, 6 billion in 1988, 9 billion will be 2050 and then numbers will start to decline rapidly. In 1950s average births per woman was 6, now it is 2.5. As that continues to drop then so will total population.

There was a bus crash a millisecond later so there are 12 to go yet before we hit the 7 billion. SO be happy! :~

So you suggest people not have any children because they may grow the number eventually to 8 billion and then 9 billion and then 10 billion which will make Earth more sad, more sad and more sad. Or you are just pointing out it is sad and not do anything about it?

I tell my friends/family to have 1 or no kids. We only have 1 kid ourselves. So I am probably doing more than most people. Nothing to be proud of though since there's not much effort involved.

I read estimates that say it'll be 10 billion by 2050 and most of that will be among the poorer parts of India and China. Meaning they'll be way below poverty levels.

I agree :-) But India's gender ratio is going down alarmingly, so soon there won't be enough women to procreate normally. Bad solution to a real problem.

Nobody says something like this. The point is that people who are barely able to sustain, educate and bring up one kid often have a soccer team on their own.

The sad thing is that this enormous number doesn’t contribute enough to the human progress. The vast majority of the scientific discoveries/technical and medical achievements/popular culture in the last two or so hundred years are coming from North America, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and few other countries. Most of the mentioned states haven’t changed significantly (not even doubled) their population the last 100 years and some are in decline the last 30. Something has to be done with the education and educational systems in the poor countries with a huge population growing rates. If we have 7 billion well educated, sane and not hungry people we will be in the space in no time.
