Skyrim is a available for preload. Yay. Load steam and get ready to start. And it's gone. No Skyrim in my games list. The forums were hacked a couple of days ago so no help there. Leave a few hours and come back still no Skyrim. Decide to contact Steam support to see what's going on. Go to create account and enter details. Wont create the account because it says I've already got an account. Ask to reset the pasword because I can vaguely remember creating an account years ago. Get Email Try to log into Steam account. No account with that email address. Wash, rinse, repeat.

If Oblivion is “just a game”?! Then Salma Hayek is just the next woman. :)

I actually made a tech support call the other day to my ISP. I had my most recent statement in hand, complete with account number. Amazingly, their support rep could not pull up my information based on account number. I had to sit there and try to guess what phone number I had given them at sign-up. Eventually, their support rep just took down my information manually and promised to get a technician dispatched to me one way or another! Its understandable that companies want to use phone number as a sort of less sensitive version of SSN (i.e. as a unique and unchanging personal identifier). It sure would make their business easier to manage if this actually worked. But for me at least, it doesn't work. E-mail address works a little bit better as a personal key, but not much... like phone numbers, I have multiple e-mail addresses, and I shouldn't be put under any obligation to keep these active just to access some other account.

I like using phone numbers...it's the only thing I have that hasn't changed in the past 8 or so years. Address has changed many times, multiple email accounts, but I've managed to keep my phone number intact through a couple different service providers (it is a cell phone however...I haven't had a house line for a few years now...except last year but I had no phone connected to it and I didn't even know the number, it was just required for internet service).

With the number of good games out there I just don't have the attention span for that anymore. I'll play through Skyrim once and never touch it again. I haven't bothered with any game modding since playing doom2. That was just so I could kill Barney the Dinosaur. I love you too Barney, with my chainsaw.

Steam is using username and not email as username. I also installed steam yesterday to a new computer, and I was also entering email and password, and then later realized that it takes username not email.

A steam support account is different from your normal user account. It uses email and password. Try it and see.

Good for you, but I'm pretty sure you're in a minority there. I know I give landline numbers for this kind of thing and that changes (obviously) whenever address does.

For Elder Scrolls you're really missing out - these aren't just new maps. Often there are overhauls that completely transform aspects of the game. I'm still playing Oblivion, thanks to the work by the modding community. Most games I can't really be bothered to play through to completion even once.

I hope you still get that worked out. A couple of days ago a few people could not understand why I would not buy Skyrim or any other game which makes having a Steam account mandatory. One more 'service' which I can live very well without.

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy

If I wasn't a big fan of the series, that's exactly what I would do. But my desire to play this game is way beyond my pride and hatred for steam.

Well, now I can say I used to be a big fan since Daggerfall. Now I have thrown the whole stuff off my computer and the whole thing is of no interest anymore. No game is worth having to jump through loops and I will certainly find something else to do. But no doubt, they will probably get away with it and try some other stunt next time. Like a few others before, they will only realize that they went too far when they have put off a few too many of their customers and some product collects dust in the shelves.

When I first started working with databases (late 90's) I took over the development of a filemaker solution.(ver 3, first one that was relational). The previous developer had used phone number as the key value for most of the relationships (ouch!) It worked alright until someone said "I have a new phone number".... changing it in the system broke things to say the least.

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
                                        And it came worse.

Yeah, I still have Daggerfall on the original box (to me the best of the series). So you might understand that I am a real big fan. I helped to translate Oblivion to portuguese. But I feel you, I'm actually starting to become not that big of a fan anymore. Starting with oblivion and their focus on developing for console and porting to PC. I feel that they are growing too much and becoming the same way Blizzard has become (they lost me already). I don't play any steam games (including counter-strike). This is the only game that broke me. I was so happy when oblivion came out and there was no DRM, but this is another move that's making me less of a fan of bethsoft. However I've been looking forward for this game for too long to dismiss it because of steam. It annoys me but, oh well, I want the game. And the reason they are probably getting away with this game is because there are too many people expecting it and steam came as a late news. Don't know if they are going to get away in future products though.

Everything comes to those who can wait. A nice little crack to get rid of Steam and, if I feel inclined, a copy from the bargain bin.
