I've heard that in some cases, this actually damages your credit... Any truth to this or just urban myth? My wife and I pay ours off every month, but I don't really have a clue about financial matters... :~ RabidK

Yes, it is done on some countries, because it's not legal to use this information on all countries, and in others it's illegal to give different interest rates for two people. But even then only a few companies do it. The best customer for a credit grantor is the customer who is regularly paying interest rates. Other problem is the information absence. The worst thing when doing a credit assessment is the "no information" status. It's like an user saying "your program crashes randomly, I didn't notice what the message was". If a credit bureau, like EQUIFAX, gives no information about you, you are assigned a basic credit loss probability, so this can harm you if you pay your debts. Sometimes, it's better for the grantor knowing you payed a debt of $X due than the "no information". At least, the credit grantor have some information on how you behave on a given credit ammount, and, after all, you managed to pay the debt of $X. Some people never will. I see dumb people

Er, Congrats, I think. If I may, here are some tips from a not-so-lucky-card-holder: 1. Use your bank's VISA/MC Check card whenever possible, instead of your credit card. This forces you to not spend more than what you really have. 2. Use the credit card only in occassions where the check card is not permitted, such as for online purchases. However... 3. Always pay your balance at the end of the month. It's the only way to ensure that you don't start slipping into bigger and bigger debt. If you won't be able to pay the balance at the end of the month, it's better to wait and not buy the item(s) until you can. 4. Enjoy the convenience! Regards, Alvaro

I don't see how it could damage your credit rating. I had no problem getting a mortgage. And actually my credit was good enough to lower my insurance costs. It could be that having a student loan and making those payments on time is what really helped my credit rating. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I suppose that would depend on whether or not you are seen as a college student through the eyes of VISA or Mastercard here in the US. College students are typically given way too much credit for use during college. I know, as I remember using it way too much, and paid the price later. Glad the damn things are paid off now. :)

Then a few months down the line I realised banks are all too happy giving people like me credit cards. Debt is free money for them.

My wife and I pay ours off every month, but I don't really have a clue about financial matters... When applying for my mortgage, I was told they look at a ratio of total balance availability vs. income, and also factor in actual balance. We had several department store cards (you know, 10% off first purchase of refrigerator, etc.) that had no balance (we pay off every month) that each had credit limit of several thousand dollars (with $0 outstanding). That hurt us because they said we had potentially 10 thousand dollars outstanding, should we choose to go max them out. I still think not paying interest is better in the long run. Glenn
