I've heard that in some cases, this actually damages your credit... Any truth to this or just urban myth? My wife and I pay ours off every month, but I don't really have a clue about financial matters... :~ RabidK

I don't see how it could damage your credit rating. I had no problem getting a mortgage. And actually my credit was good enough to lower my insurance costs. It could be that having a student loan and making those payments on time is what really helped my credit rating. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

"welcome to the american dream lauren"   I wonder what the differen proportionally is between credit given in the US and credit given, say, here in SA. i.e. I got a low credit limit here in SA for my first CC, being young and unreliable and all. I wonder what I would get in the US. p.s. Better start buying Rands, currency is doing quite well ;)

I suppose that would depend on whether or not you are seen as a college student through the eyes of VISA or Mastercard here in the US. College students are typically given way too much credit for use during college. I know, as I remember using it way too much, and paid the price later. Glad the damn things are paid off now. :)

Then a few months down the line I realised banks are all too happy giving people like me credit cards. Debt is free money for them.

My wife and I pay ours off every month, but I don't really have a clue about financial matters... When applying for my mortgage, I was told they look at a ratio of total balance availability vs. income, and also factor in actual balance. We had several department store cards (you know, 10% off first purchase of refrigerator, etc.) that had no balance (we pay off every month) that each had credit limit of several thousand dollars (with $0 outstanding). That hurt us because they said we had potentially 10 thousand dollars outstanding, should we choose to go max them out. I still think not paying interest is better in the long run. Glenn

Paying off your credit card bills does not hurt. My wife and I have been doing it for years and our credit rating is very high. Sometimes when you have a history of paying off every month even with large purchases, that can tend to increase your rating. It shows you do not exceed your "purchasing power" and raises the bar as far as how risky you are. A side note: I can't believe the amount of trouble and debt people get themselves into with credit cards.:omg: Kind regards, Tim

I've heard that in some cases, this actually damages your credit... Any truth to this or just urban myth? My wife and I pay ours off every month, but I don't really have a clue about financial matters... :~ RabidK

I've found that everytime I pay off my credit card every month, they keep raising my credit-limit. They just want to tempt me into spending more than I can pay off in a month. Just remember - the first bill passed under GWBs administration manes that if you are bankrupt you still have to pay all your credit cards off ! And interest doesn't stop even though you are bankrupt :~ The tigress is here :-D
