Britain certainly did not invent slavery, that was around for thousands of years. We were, however, the first country to ban it, then banned it throughout the Empire, and even went on several wars to end slavery across the world. I think our record on slavery is rather good, on the whole. Also, we did not sell opium to the Chinese, we bought it from them after the first opium war, and after the East Indian Company stopped getting supplied through Burma. We merely went to war to keep up the supply. The Franco Prussian war was nothing to do with us, but unfortunately the 1914-18 war was subject to defence treaties (asked for by the French) as a result of the Franco Prussian war. You cannot have it both ways. The country was named after Rhodes because of his ability to make vast amounts of money and supply diamonds (amongst many other things), to the Empire. Indeed, Britain still has the monopoly on diamond merchanting, so good for him. As for concentration camps, yes, that was one of ours, but it took a German to make it really successful. Strangely, there was an American Cavalry Captain who gave smallpox infected blankets to the Plains Tribes as a method of culling them. His name was Captain James Kirk. Weirdly not many people mention this.

Oh I know, true on all counts. British army used concentration camps in Cyprus also AFTER WWII There were also collaborators in Greece (my origin) and also among the Arabs of the Middle East not to mention the Bosnian Waffen SS regiment... I can go on. However did anyone else bring a whole continent to havoc twice in 30 years in the 20th century? (Because the French managed to do so before with Napoleon...)

Objection, Your Honor! As far as I know, WW I started with the assassination of the heir to the throne of Austria, leading to a war between Austria and Serbia, which again escalated and pulled in England, Russia and France and allied countries on both sides. And yes, Germany was an ally of Austria.

Yes I understand what the Nazis did was horrific. These slave labourers should count themselves lucky that they are receiving a special pension. If they were slave labourers in most other countries they would have gotten nothing. Having said that, it is not right that the Germans drop this bomb on them know. Let them be, in another 10 to 20 years there wont be any WW2 survivors left that would qualify for the pernsion.

I think you have been urban mythed as the idea and practice of Concentration Camps predate the Boar war even the US practiced it prior to the Boar war, examples of this type of control over disputed territories goes back to biblical times Oh and the reason why so many died in the Boar war camps was that the food supplies for these camps were attacked by the Boars. Its a often repeated claim that is completely untrue and is rolled out to diss the British.

in 1870 there was no treaty that required British involvement, in 1914 there was. It was also the Military might of the united Germany that was the threat not so much economic. remember that in 1914 Britain had one of the SMALLIST armies in europe!

Yes Britain bought and sold slaves, but would you kindly state which major power didn’t? and IIRC we were the first country to actively enforce anti slavery policies (and were the second to outlaw slavery after Belgium, and even then the law in Britain started its passage before that in Belgium) I am always amazed at the rubbish spouted to defame Britain, and never any credit, did you know that that African countries under the empire had higher literacy rates that any European country? It is easy to pick out less that stella parts of Bitish rule but you need to temper it with the good it did. And compaired to some other imperial powers the British were angels the local would have suffered far greater under other powers, you only need look at what happened under french rule another point is that these countries did not have a choice between British rule or independence it was a choice of British or ONE OF THE OTHER EUROPEAN POWERS, No British empire = bigger French/German/Russian empires

You need to understand Germans. They have laws, and they follow them, with almost no thought at all. They are utterly incapable of forseeing that taxing these pensions is in any way wrong, or likely to cause offense, and at least be very bad PR. In this respect, no, they havent learnt a thing. But dont forget the Dutch faschists were so numerous they formed an SS division. There were also faschists in Belgium who worked with the Nazis. There were faschists in England who would have too, and the US dont forget, had its own Nazi party. So while it is easy to victimise Germany dont forget that against the backdrop of their time, when eugenics was popular science, and faschism was rife, they weremt so unusual. And by the way, the British invented concentration camps many decades before the Germans.

Well, as I stated at the end, all countries have their dirty stuff. And that Britain is Great bebcause invading Saxons forced some of them to go and set up in France. By the way, it is 'Boer War'. 'Boer' is Dutch for 'farmer', 'boar' is a hairy pig. OK there could well be a similarity between the two, but best stick to the correct one. :)

His name was Captain James Kirk. Weirdly not many people mention this.No one mentions it because it didn't happen. Never ever ever believe a word that comes out of Ward Churchill's mouth. On the other hand, it was tried at Fort Pitt, on a small scale, back when it was still British. Whether it worked or not is debatable, since smallpox was already present in the area. The two blankets and one handkerchief may or may not have contributed; no way to tell at this late date.

if you get picky on a post you should at least make sure you are not making errors yourself. or did you mean Bu? and now claiming that we invented concentration camps because we were the first to call them that is pure evasion and shows the quality of your argument or are you claiming that the name makes them different? if thats the case then we should call the German ones extermination camps as this would be a better description as to the purpose.

And it came worse.Yes, you are right there were chain ally contracts between almost all European countries which caused a “domino effect” dragging everyone into the nasty war. The other reason was that a fierce nationalism was growing up in every country – the people were going to war happily. The only exception was Russia which was in the middle of a civil war by then but she was a strong ally with France and historical enemy with Austro-Hungarian Empire so she had no choice but enter the war. Third reason was that this was the first war including mass armies and total draft of the mail population, so nobody has expected the scale of devastation. Last but not least was the ongoing economic and trade war between England and Germany. England didn’t want to give up her trade monopoly and Germany needed new markets for his strong economy - so everybody was fucked. Add to this shitty basket the ticking bomb on the Balkans after the first and second Balkan wars a few years earlier (the second one inspired by Austrian and Germany diplomats by the way) and you have the picture.

Nazi Slaves being Taxed.[^] How typical of our European neighbours that when things are a bit tight and they will be required to foot the bill of all the profligate countries in Europe that they decide to retroactively tax people enslaved under Nazi Rules. Hitler would have been proud of them.

Hitler would have been proud of them. How I hate that. Why are you English people always sympathise with the Nazi time? Nice comments in that thread there. To set a tax on an income - no matter if it's a pension or working income - is absolute normal in Germany. That's why we get along much better than some other states in Europe. Now this is a special "income" and they need to take a closer look. And there we can find out that other states are the ones that are charging taxes and not the Germany. Russia has no taxes on those compensations. The English regulations on forced laborer compensations can be read here. I bet there is something more behind the story.
regards Torsten I never finish anyth...
I've no big problem taxing pensions, it's the retroactive nature of this law (if it's being reported correctly) that I find offensive and rather unfair.
