.com .co.uk .com.au

This was prompted by an ad shown on the uk soccer game I am watching. The ad was for GoCompare.com , which seems to be a UK SITE GIVING COMPARISONS ON PRICES OF VARIOUS INSURANCES, (scuse caps, in iPad and can't be bothered to fix) Anyhow, I was initially confused, as I would expect an english company to have a .co.uk address. GoCompare.co.uk does redirect to GoCompare.com, but I wondered why use .com instead of .co.uk for a consumer site ?

Anyone can buy a .com account. The .uk is useful for consumer in the UK for they know it will be specifically aimed at them and use a proper currency (£). But .com is also acceptable and most organisations like to have all the bases covered.

All thisi is true, but I was more wondering WHY a uk company targeting solely UK consumers, would use a .com domain as their domain of choice? Sure, register the .com too, but wy not use .co.uk as the one to which e .com redirects.

.com has more kudos, gives the impression of being more important that a mere ".(insert country of choice here)" and therefore more professional.

Not so. The registered TLD for .co.us is in fact the good old USA. (see below).
