I'd suggest they misjudged the market and now can't sell the 17s.

Work out if the extra weight, screen size, reduced battery life etc are worth more to you than the price difference...

Yeah, for the same price I'd get the 15 too. But should I pay extra for the 15? That's what I am wondering about. Strange as it may seem the 17 is cheaper (for select models).

No it is not strange. I think to make lightweight and portable costs money so 15" may be expensive than the 17".

(1) Given same-spec'd same-price laptops, one a 17" and one a 15", which would you buy? (2) Now assume the 15" is 100 bucks more than the 17", will this change your purchase? (3) Now assume the 17" is 100 bucks more than the 15", will this change your purchase? Thanks. p.s. Dell is arbitrary, replace Dell with any laptop with 15" and 17" models.

This won't be the primary dev machine, probably won't be the 2nd choice either. I'd normally have picked the 15 for the same price but for some models thw 17 is cheaper than the 15 for identical specs.

Ok if you are not doing development on the thing why a laptop at all, portability then becomes the criteria. I no longer take anything but a Galaxy Note when on holidays, traveling for work I'd take the smallest that would get the job done.

I think Rama is also right, if they are two different models, even with the same specs, then the cost could be in making the 15 inch lighter. I just got a new Samsung notebook, and a lot of it's price was to pay for it being light.

I got a Studio 17 about 2.5 years ago and wouldn't go back to a 15" or smaller for a few reasons. 0) Screen size, obviously, this is not a secondary machine it is an alternate to my desktop as such I want to be comfortable while working. 1) Separate key pad, may not sound like much but it comes in very handy. 2) Some 17" laptops come with the option of having 2 hard drives, so you can boot off a SSD and have a mechanical drive up to 1TB for storage. Some people claim weight is a deciding factor, but with the difference between something like a XPS 15" and 17" being about 660 grams to me this isn't a bid deal, the laptop goes in the bag, bag goes over my shoulder, done.

The 15" one if I'm going to be carrying the laptop during travel, the 17" if the laptop will only travel in my car/bus between home and work (or client site). Lugging a 17" Dell 1720 on international flights has made my biceps look like Chuck Norris'. The $100 difference wouldn't matter. /ravi

Was a looking at the Dell XPS 15 couple of weeks before and felt bigger and finally went to 13.5" Sony Vaio since its compact.

The smaller one. I'm looking for a good 13" one, at the moment. The 15" I have is too big for traveling together in my opinion. The 9" netbook, on the other hand, while ideal for traveling, has too low display resolution for my needs. I think 13" is a good compromise (12" would be possibly better, but I am not able to find good ones).
