Can anyone provide me with any solid evidence that I need better protection on my computer than MSE? I've used Computer Associates Antivirus for years with no infections and no hassles. It automatically renews every year, charging me $50 for 3 computers. But it hasn't reported finding any problem in a couple of years, and I've been quite happy with MSE on the new machine since I built it and neglected to install the CA product. I've mentioned MSE here before, and it wasn't taken seriously by the community, but no hard facts were exchanged, either. Other than the perfectly normal distrust of all things Microsoft, is there any good reason to keep paying for antivirus software from a third party? Facts only, please... I'm trying to make a real decision here, not a political one.

For what it's worth, my memories of discussions of MSSE here on the Lounge, and on other places on CP, over the last few years have all been very, very positive. The initial (paid) release of the service was a disaster, and I actually succeeded in getting a full refund from MS of a subscription. Then I went back to Kaspsersky, but when really good reports on the free MSSE started appearing here, from folks I respect, and my Kaspersky sub was about up, I switched to MSSE. I also use MalWareBytes product, but I don't know how to evaluate if that really adds any other level of security, or not. Probably the most interesting security product I tried was EMSI's software, and that was the only piece of software that let me find and eliminate a really nasty root-kit infection from a friend's computer: but I found running it on my own computer generated a lot of "false positives:" but that's based on events that took place over three years ago. So, I'm happily chugging along with MSSE, MS's firewall, and very high security setting on all browsers I use. best, Bill

I always recommend the free version of AVG when asked about antivirus software. Might be worth a look if you have never tried it.

I've not used a paid for AV app for about 7 years (and before that for only a year, because it came pre-loaded on the machine). I used to use AVast and used to urge others to do the same. I've been using MSE pretty much since it became free, and it has been excellent so far: no infections, doesn't incur the performance drag of say Norton and Trend (the ones I've had to suffer at work).

If a vendor does not submit their products for testing by a third party I do question why that would be as for those that do get submitted and fail the results are published[^] have a look at the Win7 Pro column some of those that failed are avast, Comodo anti-virus, Comodo internet security, Sophos and Symantec Norton (no surprise there). I really don't care why CA didn't participate I was just pointing it out because Roger said he used their products in the past, but, not participating in having your product tested against others with a known list of in the wild viruses does make me question how effective their products are, also having had to use CA products at a former employer where CA anti-virus missed viruses I wouldn't use it. As for offering subscription based services, well they do have to fund themselves somehow.

Over the years I have tried most of the AV products: Symantec, McAfee, Kaspersky, even Panda. Then I moved to MSE. Of all the ones I have tried, it gives the least hassle, the least slow down, and I haven't had a problem yet - that I know about. It flags up a finding about once every two weeks, and it just works. As a MS user (and a hater of the cavalier way they treat their customers as a free test department, and rarely fix bugs in favour of adding features instead) that is praise indeed. It just works. End of.

Also I'm happy with MSE(1+ year). And I have installed Spybot search & destroy too, now my Laptop's performance is great.

I always recommend the free version of AVG when asked about antivirus software. Might be worth a look if you have never tried it.
Countered the univote: I didn't like AVG when we used at the first place I worked out of Uni. That said giving you a one vote for expressing an honest opinion isn't fair IMO.

I haven't personally used any antivirus software in years! I work mostly on *nix systems and am very careful about my activities. I have been virus free for ~9 years and counting (even on windows systems)!! So my best recommendation for antivirus would be a combo of linux and paranoia. ;) Thank you for the counter vote.

I'm using MSE and had no problems so far. I even forgot about it (and to me that is a nice feature of an anti-virus software).
