Why does your guess immediately turn to blaming it on the US ? Japan's the country that. by dumping, destroyed the US Memory Chip market in the 90's and quadrupled the price. ,Then, when a US corporate consortium nearly finished building a new (and thus more competitive) plant, they mysteriously dropped the prices so low that they non-Japanese based plant became unfeasible. On the other hand, it's illegal to import more than ca. 1 Kilo of rice into Japan - because real imports would hurt their 'traditional' industry (still using oxen to plow the fields). When Kodak was pressured to leave South Africa due to apartheid, Fuji Film moved right in (Japs were considered honorary whites in SA). Japan suck to any but other Japanese: it's been the hallmark of their national culture since always. They're predatory beasts.

using tariffs and import limitations to benefit ones own country, even at the expense of the industries in other countries, is completely ordinary, all over the world, and has been as long as there has been trade between nations.

I just reported this incident in the Bugs and Sugs forum. Hopefully, it will get some attention.

what "incident" ? you don't think calling Japanese "bloodsuckers" and "beasts" might offend some people ?

Offensive, yes. Abusive, no. This is my opinion of course but if everyone who got offended or got their feeling hurt, went and reported the offending post as abuse, it wouldn't take long for the Lounge to get real quiet for long periods of time.

there's quite a big overlap between abuse and offense.

Because you think they are profiteering buggers, unless Sony has legal objections to that label?

Is that overlap worth -160 points a pop? I don't think so. This is not the first time this has happened. If you said something that hurt my feelings and it wasn't abusive, do you deserve to get the -160 point hit? I don't think so.

You're very new to the lounge - and there have been very derogatory testaments made (even in the last few days) about, for example, Gypsies (aka, Romani). And there have been others about others. Certainly a lot of risk of offense going on. Did you give those a go, too? The fact is that the Japanese culture was and is extremely Xenophobic. They might copy western habits, but, from those I know who've visited on a long-term basis, their report was that no non-Japanese person was ever made to feel at home. Several first-person accounts from diverse acquaintances carries some weight with me. They're also busily erasing their culpability for being an initiator of WW II, and glosses/ignores their murderous brutality in China. Beasts hardly describes it. Maybe I just have too many Chinese friends, but I'm not of a mind to give them a 'bye' . Risking another -160 . . . never mind - totally not worth the effort.

Thanks for being a person who makes an effort. I pretty much think it unseemly to whine about the points. It's received quite a pile of 5's and 1's. Is their problem that it's not English/American/French/etc, but Japanese? Are they somehow some sort of underdog that needs protections and sympathy? As I said, they can go back to their station, a gap between the cheeks.

No - just that perhaps that even on CP, the Good Ol' Boys network operates right on target. Not really a surprise, but always a disappointment. A club I never join. Let me return your remark: that you didn't see fit to police remarks like: "stinking thieving gipsy bastards Romany", posted with the strike-through repeatedly in the thread. For some reason, that's OK with you? I don't think I come anywhere close - but the items were not removed as abusive. I confess I didn't report it as abusive or even down-vote it. Fortunately, I don't play for points - but do get wired for principals. Chief amongst these is that signified by a tool known as a level - symbolic of equality.

I should clarify: Upvotes or downvotes, at least someones given some thought to the post (naive?). Counting response is rather interesting, maybe even rewarding. That's not saying I'll post just to get attention - which problem would be better referred to as Trolling It's more like being a radio or TV personality: you really don't know if anyone's watching or listening without some sort of feedback. Or, as the old time actors used to say: "I don't care what they write about me, so long as they spell my name correctly"

I have to half agree here. The younger generation is getting more open and more accepting of foreigners. Hopefully in two or three more generations this sort of thing will just be a bad memory. I don't believe Japan will ever admit that they did anything wrong in Nanking or in WWII. Just like we are happy to forget the entire forced relocation bit we did to citizens of Japanese descent. It boils down to "We won't say we are sorry until you appologize first for this other thing you did!" from every side. See the Turkish and Armenian flap for more of the same.

Chief amongst these is that signified by a tool known as a level - symbolic of equality.

i don't see any such comments. and it's not my job to seek them out. but more importantly, the existence of such comments does not insulate you from the consequences of your own offensive comments.

I used to post here in the Lounge almost exclusively for a reaction, mostly bad; I wasn't trolling but I wasn't looking to make friends either. I have earned myself quite a reputation with some members as an obnoxious American trouble maker. I just post now about things that matter to me or I have some feeling about...mostly.

Actually, for what little it's worth, the US did step up and apologize to the relocated Japanese Americans (and their decedents in many cases). I'm not totally clear if they paid them any toke reparations, but we did own up to it.

True enough. Either way, I think we will have to wait a few more generations to see any meaningful apology out of Japan. To much of this 'honor' concept still ingrained in the older generations. That or it is politicians and those in power unable to accept that they might be wrong the world over.

Am I the only one here thinking "good business sense"? Sony are a company out to make a profit - as much profit as possible. Even with the backlash against them, I would wager that a tiny insignificant portion of consumers will be put off buying a WH album or downloading a tune because of this.
