That is my biggest peeve. I understand the ads and whatnot. annoying as they may be, fine people are going to make money. BUT, I am not a high school dropout, or a moron(at least I don't think so) and I DO like to read. But I HATE watching a video that is nothing but some twat telling me the story when I could read it in 1/10 of the time. And in fact when I hit those I usually just close the page.
It used to be what you know that got you ahead, then it was who you know, now its what you know about who you know that gets you ahead. Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.
And text is honestly more convenient. I like to skim news when I'm bored, and it's generally at places where I either don't have speakers, or the ambient noise level is too high to hear my speakers without sticking my ear to the speaker (it's a netbook, not exactly the best speakers). Sure, I do lug around some a massive pair of headphones but it's not worth digging them out to watch one video they should have just given me a text version of in the first place.

Would you be happier paying to use an ad-free Google, GMail, Yahoo Finance and YouTube? If so, I humbly suggest that you would be a member of a small minority. Small enough to make these services not viable. A modified hosts file spares me the angst of unwanted ads and I log out of Facebook when I'm done using it (which is about 10 minutes a day). I log into Google only about once a month for a few minutes to monitor my AdSense account - other than that, I couldn't care less if Google knows that my IP address searched for "bacon". :) /ravi

I pay for a private mail account with my web host. I stopped using Hulu Plus because they increased the adds. I would definately pay for the services to keep from being exposed to adds. This wouldn't make the services non existent. They could let paid users go add free, and continue bombing the others with adds.

Rant Mode: ON Here are some internet SINS that should be sufficient cause to send certain developers straight to HELL. 1: If you run a news site that requires a person to sign into Facebook in order to comment on the news item then you can go to HELL. I don't have a Facebook account and I'm never going to have one - despite your best attempts to force me into having one. Facebook is just a bunch of bored people picking through each other's garbage and it sucks. 2: If you put a video up on a news site the video had best not start out with a 30 second ad (or any ad) or you can go straight to HELL. I no longer watch NBC videos, and ignore NBC content of any sort because they lace it all with ads. MSN sucks for the same reason. They'll post 10 great videos but you spend most of your time watching ads. Hello, that's why I quit watching TV. There was a point in time when the internet was about convenience and information and now it's all ads. I HATE people who keep pushing their stuff in my face and they deserve eternal punishmnet for it. I'm actually getting to the point where I use the internet less and less because marketing is chewing up 90% of my bandwidth with stuff I don't want or need. I'm like you I don't hardly watch TV since they lengthened the commercial time to 30%. Used to be if a show you wanted to watch was coming on you did what you needed to do then sit down and watch the whole thing with little interruption now I'm of the age where when a commercial comes on I get up and do other things and by the time it comes back on I forgot what I was watching.
I don't watch commercial television at all. I canceled my Hulu account. I still can't get away from it. They started putting t.v.'s at the isles in stores now, so I refuse to go in unless I have to. Most of the time I ride to the store with my wife and then sit in the car while she shops. I make it a point to NOT buy anything I've seen ad advertisement for.

Most of the time I find myself searching for my keys and glasses. Unfortunately Google rarely helps in these cases. :) You could always use one of several anonymizer services to at least partially hide your IP address. /ravi

Most of the time I find myself searching for my keys and glasses. Unfortunately Google rarely helps in these cases. :) You could always use one of several anonymizer services to at least partially hide your IP address. /ravi

Install Google desktop search, and type the location of your keys and glasses in a text file that will be indexed by it. Update the file every time you move the keys and/or glasses. Now, Google can find your keys and glasses. Easy peasy. :)

Ads before a video is one of the reasons I prefer articles. You do not have to wait to start reading, and can also skim past the crude. The ads do give us content that would not be available either. However, when you start paying and still get the ads, like on cable/satellite TV, thats going too far.

I totally agree, and might add to that sites that pop up near-full window-sized ads on top of the actual content, and staying right on top of the content no matter how you resize the window or scroll up or down. Not only that, these are not really dialogues or windows, as I have set my browser to prevent pop-ups or opening new windows, so it must be some flash or other web-programming gadget designed to deliberately annoy people who wish to use the internet in a meaningful way. To add insult to injury, these 'pretender dialogues' do appear to contain some windows-like buttons on the top right, but they're so small they're hard to recognize on a large screen, and clicking on the top right button by reflex (because you expect it to close the window) will just open a new window for that unwanted content in the background! (usually the button for closing the window is the second-right-most one, but you have to look real close to recognize that) If anyone knows a plugin for FireFox to add sites like that to some kind of 'ignore list' and never ever again try to open windows from that site, I would greatly appreciate that. I can understand that 'free' still needs funding, but there's a world of difference between unobtrusive static ads on the sidebar and freaking, flashing, screaming ads pushed right into my face that don't give me an easy way to escape, and bog down loading times to a crawl.

I've actually spent several minutes at one site trying to figure out how to remove the ad that was preventing me from viewing the content. Eventually I gave up and left. SPECIAL NOTE: To the advertiser that does these things: No, I don't remember the ad and it's a good thing because I'd go out of my way to NOT buy your product and I'd tell my friends to do the same.

I always find it interesting how non-Facebook users categorize what other people use Facebook for. It's reminds me of when a child decides he doesn't like a certain food without ever taking a bite.
I don't like to: 1: Hear about everyone's day. 2: Be showered with links to funny cat videos. 3: Sort through hundreds of pictures. 4: Share stupid jokes. 5: Get a link to your favorite new song only to get Rick Rolled. It takes all the will power I have to endure a 20 minute visit from the neighbor, or from a relative. Usually after my wife and kids tell me about their day I've had all the dialog I can stand and I want to go hide under the bed. I've yet to see a genuinely funny cat video (1) and I'm 45 so I've heard every joke ever told. Your taste in music sucks and your political opinions are going to destroy Western Civilization (2). So it has nothing to do with Facebook as a technology, but rather, at the end of the day Facebook is just a new way to distribute the same boring crap I've been trying to avoid all of my life. You're not the type of person who needs or even wants a lot of social interaction. That's fine, and because of that, Facebook is probably not for you, which is also fine. I guess I'm just saying that the fact that Facebook isn't for you isn't the same as saying that Facebook users are "a bunch of bored people picking through each other's garbage".
