In that case the only thing we should trust is our attitude and willingness to learn. because whatever the future has to offer(technology wise). We will learn and embrace it (we have to it is our bread and butter)

I am actually in middle of deciding technology for my application and the competition between ASP.net and Silverlight. the way my application work Silverlight is very much suited (has to done lot of calculation and that that data is present in multiple page). however in argument, other architect are saying Silverlight has no future and MS is moving away from it in favour of HTML5 so ASP.net would be better choice in long run. So would like suggestion from people here for both and longevity of Silverlight. I know MS is pursuing for XAML, however there is no news about MS pushing for silverlight!

As someone pointed out MS has no idea so why would we. Having said that I have no compunction moving our teams to Silverlight, IMHO it will be supported for at least the next decade and that is an acceptable time frame for me. Look how much trouble they are having killing off VB6. If there was a viable HTML5 LOB framework I might look at it (and I'm not) but I'm going to wait a couple of years before I get interested, meanwhile I need to deliver now. I have such a strong dislike for ASP anything that the decision would be (was) a no brainer.

Microsoft have not made a definitive statement, so the answer is, no-one knows. However, since it's still under development as of today, it will be supported for at least 5 years, even if they discontinue it tomorrow, and likely more like 10. That is long enough for a web app, so if Silverlight is suited to your application, use it. Non-MVC ASP.net is more likely to be officially deprecated, in my opinion, because it's a huge legacy mess and it must be a pain to support.

Keep it simple : if Silverlight does the job, go for it.

Is there a reason you're tied to the browser? The only advantage I see there is simplifying install, but you could also use WPF and use Click-Once for deployment. A little more power, a little less restrictive. We've had great success with that for our LOB app.
