Notebook recommendations

I am going to get a notebook hopefully this week. I'm hoping for some recommendations. My preferred specs are: 2 gHz 512 MB RAM 60 gig HDD 15" screen, 1600x1200. I'm partial to the look of the Dell, but I've heard they aren't much good. Any comments ? Again, you can screw up a C/C++ program just as easily as a VB program. The only laptop I've bought in the last 10 years, was a Toshiba from Circuit City back around 1997 or something... took it home, turned it on, and there were 3 pixels on the screen glowing solid red. Irritated, I called up Circuit City and they said there was a 15% fee or some stupid thing to return it. I called up Toshiba, and they said "that's perfectly normal, we don't consider an LCD screen to be defective until it has over 15 (or 30 pixels or something like that) not working". I said I don't care, this is unacceptable -- and if you're not going to do it -- then I'll do it myself... she laughed and said that the replacement screen costs more than the computer (~$3000 back then) -- computer cost two-thousand something.

Wow, I didn't know their customer service sucked to bad. I myself have never bought anything from them or know anybody that has had a problem with one of their products but I'll keep that in mind the next time I buy electronics. Thanks for the info. Brad Jennings

I've still got it, with the 3 red pixels. Don't use it anymore since it is outdated. Still burns me when I think about it. Those red pixels are very irritating to look at.

Yes, I remember my boss had a similar problem with a Toshiba notebook and dead pixels. I *always* buy with my Visa, because I know they will always reverse a transaction for me. That's one of the best things about a c/card, and so many people seem unaware of it. I could probably live with the lower resolution, given that I'll use a monitor most of the time. I presume I can upgrade to a 60 g. HDD. I'll check it out. HP and Compaq is crap. IBM and Sony cost too much. Toshiba doesn't last. My second pick would be Gateway, but the DELL machines offer a lot of features at a great price. Kind regards, Tim

My boss bought that same laptop last week. He's a super techi so I assume its pretty good. The only other option he got was wireless lan. He purchased it with only 256mb of ram because it would delay the delivery by several weeks to add more. The docking bay is pretty cool also. The only negative is a ~2hr battery life. Todd Smith

Why do you say Toshiba does not last ? A friend ( who has his first, new Toshiba notebook ) tells me Toshiba rules and Dell sucks. I'm drawn to Dell because of the pricing, there is no mistake.
