Get a DELL, DELL, DELL. HP and Compaq is crap. IBM and Sony cost too much. Toshiba doesn't last. My second pick would be Gateway, but the DELL machines offer a lot of features at a great price. Kind regards, Tim

Why do you say Toshiba does not last ? A friend ( who has his first, new Toshiba notebook ) tells me Toshiba rules and Dell sucks. I'm drawn to Dell because of the pricing, there is no mistake. I don't think Gateway trade in Australia anymore. Christian No offense, but I don't really want to encourage the creation of another VB developer. - Larry Antram 22 Oct 2002

Again, you can screw up a C/C++ program just as easily as a VB program. OK, maybe not as easily, but it's certainly doable. - Jamie Nordmeyer - 15-Nov-2002

I am going to get a notebook hopefully this week. I'm hoping for some recommendations. My preferred specs are: 2 gHz 512 MB RAM 60 gig HDD 15" screen, 1600x1200. I'm partial to the look of the Dell, but I've heard they aren't much good. Any comments ? Christian No offense, but I don't really want to encourage the creation of another VB developer. - Larry Antram 22 Oct 2002

I've still got it, with the 3 red pixels. Don't use it anymore since it is outdated. Still burns me when I think about it. Those red pixels are very irritating to look at.

Toshiba! Great prices for the high range laptops, like you're looking at, great components, great features... incredible screens. Not too name-brand, in the sense that they don't stuff a lot of crap on your hard disk. In general, I LOVE my Toshiba. And it was the cheapest out there.

Go for a Sony Vaio. I have used the SRX, GRX and GRS models and like them all, especialy the GRX/GRS because they have built in wireless. Dell would be my second vote, I would stay away from HP, Compaq and Gateway. IBM and Toshiba have good reputations, but I haven't used them before and almost everyone I know either has been using a Sony or Dell for the past 3 years.

Hi CG I bought an HP zt1260, but it had some power issues (wouldnt boot up) as well as a white pixel that was annoying :-( So I returned it and bought a Fujitsu C Series Lifebook laptop from Fry's. It cost be 1400 (with taxes) for a P4 1.7/256/30 Gb I think it'll be another 70 for 512, another 100 for the 60 Gb. And perhaps another 100 for the P4 2GHz. So I guess for about 1700 you'd get what you want. I am quite happy with the laptop (only 14" screen though, dunno if they have 15" ones) Nish

This specs are very similar to my Dell laptop - the SmartPC 250N. It's fantastic - I love every minute I spend working on it :) The res actually goes much higher than you have said you would like, and looks superb. It's processor is slightly higher than you require (2.4), but it comes with a 40GB HDD - although there is an option to upgrade if you like. Good luck with choosing - I found it quite stressful, although I'm pleased I took the time researching as I'm now delighted with my choice

I have two Dell laptops, an Inspiron 7500 that I bought a couple years ago, and an Inspiron 8200 that I bought a couple months ago, which matches your specs exactly except I opted for a smaller hard disk. I also didn't get the DVD/CD combo, instead getting just the CDRW, and I didn't get a floppy drive, but I did get an extra battery. <$2K. I'm very happy with Dell--my other laptop went with me everywhere, several trips cross-country, several minor drops, and survived kitty spit-up. One thing about the 15" 1600x1200. I love it, but things sure are small. Almost too small. If you have the $$$, Sony (I think) as a 15.7" or 16" (can't remember which) laptop. I saw it at Fry's last time I was in San Diego. Beautiful. Full keyboard, etc. But the additional inch for the screen makes it that much bigger. Plus, x2 the cost! Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

I have, and it's not good. Don't get me wrong, 1600x1200 is the only resolution I use on my crt-monitors, but my laptop have a 15.1" monitor running at 1400x1050, and it's great and you can actually read the text on it ;) Get a Compaq. I have a Evo N800c, and it's the best laptop I have ever tried. Even my friends that have Dell's love my Compaq  - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"

Get a DELL, DELL, DELL. HP and Compaq is crap. IBM and Sony cost too much. Toshiba doesn't last. My second pick would be Gateway, but the DELL machines offer a lot of features at a great price. Kind regards, Tim
