Lunch room banter

We had a discussion at lunch time on the question: If NASA came to you tomorrow and said 'You've been picked for the mission to mars, get your bags...' Would you go? I said yes, I would go without hesitation, as did one other person. The other 4 all said no (for various perfectly valid reasons). I felt it was the ultimate adventure and a chance to do something tremendously exciting and unique. What would you say and why?

No 1 - severe motion sickness, a simple merry-go-round makes me very ill. 2 - wife and small daughter, missing them would make life very difficult.

Is this a one way trip? No for me either way. The one great fear I have is not seeing my daughter grow up, I cannot imagine anything that would make me willingly give that up. I know plenty on here are seperated from their families for periods through work, and it would take a lot of money to consider just that seperation.

Nope. They asked me what I'd say to my wife when I left. "Bye!" (My long suffering missus and children already know this!)

I've actually had this discussion with friends myself, and honestly I think I would, if only to leave my mark on history. There isn't really anything in my life that would stop me from doing it at the moment (who needs a college degree on Mars anyways? ;P).

Or, if it was planned to be a one-way trip, would you go? "First human on Mars"? I am sure lots of people would be willing to die for that. Maybe not the kind of people you want to trust will a multi-billion dollar spacecraft...but still, lots.

No. Two words: lowest bidder (See also Capricorn One) But plenty of other reasons as well.

Yes. For the same reason as you. It would be the ultimate adventure and the chance to be part of something truly noteworthy historically.
I wasn't, now I am, then I won't be anymore.

The difficult we do right away... ...the impossible takes slightly longer.

I'm with you. I can't do roller coasters either. I tried one after a few years, but stupidly tried it when we first got there. The kids were quite made when we had to go home cause daddy was sick now. :( That and I wouldn't be able to be away from the wife and kids that long. If I was single and they had medicine for the trip, I would definitely go.

Honest answer: YES!!!! Snarky response: No, because if NASA was dumb enough to pick me there is no chance they could even get the rocket off the ground.
Haha, your snarky responce is what I was thinking. But for slightly different reasons. I would be thinking, Oh crap I guess I spoke up in the wrong forum... And then say "Are you asking me if I 'will' go or asking if I 'want' to go"
