We had a discussion at lunch time on the question: If NASA came to you tomorrow and said 'You've been picked for the mission to mars, get your bags...' Would you go? I said yes, I would go without hesitation, as did one other person. The other 4 all said no (for various perfectly valid reasons). I felt it was the ultimate adventure and a chance to do something tremendously exciting and unique. What would you say and why?

Yes. It'll be interesting, and that's quite the understatement.

Nope. They asked me what I'd say to my wife when I left. "Bye!" (My long suffering missus and children already know this!)

I've actually had this discussion with friends myself, and honestly I think I would, if only to leave my mark on history. There isn't really anything in my life that would stop me from doing it at the moment (who needs a college degree on Mars anyways? ;P).

Well, consider it cheaper and quicker than divorce.

Or, if it was planned to be a one-way trip, would you go? "First human on Mars"? I am sure lots of people would be willing to die for that. Maybe not the kind of people you want to trust will a multi-billion dollar spacecraft...but still, lots.

Honest answer: YES!!!! Snarky response: No, because if NASA was dumb enough to pick me there is no chance they could even get the rocket off the ground.

Yes. For the same reason as you. It would be the ultimate adventure and the chance to be part of something truly noteworthy historically.

I'm with you. I can't do roller coasters either. I tried one after a few years, but stupidly tried it when we first got there. The kids were quite made when we had to go home cause daddy was sick now. :( That and I wouldn't be able to be away from the wife and kids that long. If I was single and they had medicine for the trip, I would definitely go.

Haha, your snarky responce is what I was thinking. But for slightly different reasons. I would be thinking, Oh crap I guess I spoke up in the wrong forum... And then say "Are you asking me if I 'will' go or asking if I 'want' to go"

If the round trip could be made in less than a month, then maybe. More than that, forget about it, I'd go out of my freakin' mind. :wtf: :omg:

We had a discussion at lunch time on the question: If NASA came to you tomorrow and said 'You've been picked for the mission to mars, get your bags...' Would you go? I said yes, I would go without hesitation, as did one other person. The other 4 all said no (for various perfectly valid reasons). I felt it was the ultimate adventure and a chance to do something tremendously exciting and unique. What would you say and why?

Not for me thanks. I see absolutely no need to leave this beautiful place I live on now. Heck, if I need to get off this planet then I sure won't find any peace and beauty anywhere else. Besides, why go to Mars? For what? Just to say I was first? Who would clean up the shiyte you leave behind? They don't even play rugby there. You won't find a decent cappuccino. If you want to put it in perspective search YouTube for videos of The Pub Landlord, Al Murray, and watch his argument about the US going to the moon and how pointless that was. I'm sure you Yankees would soon establish another World Series on Mars and would have the same number of countries taking part, namely, one. There'd also be no pets, no rubbish dumps, no global warming, no pollution, no wars (initially). In short bugger all. I'll stay where I am. 127.0.0.1. There's no place like home.

Absolutely yes, simply because there is nothing holding me here, and it's something I've wanted to do all my life. The few who would miss me would smile and wish me godspeed... :)
