Perhaps I'm the last one to the party, but I've been using FireFox for my main browser for a long, long time. Recently it has started freezing for a few seconds here and there, then there are the (what seems like) daily updates every time I want to do something other than restart for the updates again. As a result, I've installed Opera and it seems to be much better, faster, stabler at the moment. So, I haven't taken FF off of my machines, and perhaps if it stabilizes I'll start using it again, but in the meantime, sorry FF - you just lost a user.

I had no compunction going to chrome recently as the stability of FF was too irritating. Having said that I have to use IE in the office and saw similar problems with it for a while but I blame my net nazi for most of them.

Yep, it did all that a few days ago, but then the freezing up got worse and I finally had enough. I tried IE on the same websites and it was OK, as was Chrome, but Opera looks like the clear winner for me. Sadly, it looks like FF is at the end of its life and it feels like losing an old friend. :((

It happens when you have used the browser for a very long time and your cache DB i.e SQL file (Firefox maintains it internally) gets too much big. Now Mozilla Corp has gone into a Fast fix and Release cycle mode. So you will expect these updates very fast unlike its the olden days where youll get once a 6 months cycle. May be edit your about:config file and reset automatic update options.

Don't be too quick to blame the net nazi. My lady has a relatively new machine, and uses IE most of the time. But recently she's had trouble with IE shutting itself down while trying to complete tasks like finishing an online college test that can't be started over. I suggested that she switch to Chrome, and she hasn't had a problem since. Her machine is a Dell, with Win7 Ultimate, and she's tried both IE7 and IE8 - she has no interest in trying IE9, since nothing previous works worth a damn. I haven't experienced the shutdown problem myself, but I've been forced to switch to Chrome because my school site won't render pages properly with IE9 - text areas overlap each other and make the page unreadable. But I have to keep it on my machine because when downloading test results, Chrome reports a duplicate header violation and won't download my results for security reasons. IE doesn't mind security violations, and happily downloads any crap I select. Why can't they all just get along?

I concur... Chrome gets it right most of the time, and I wish that the rest of them would get on the bandwagon. Chrome has its quirks, but I've found it far more predictable in its responses to my coding, according to my interpretation of the standards. I could be wrong, easily, but what are the odds that someone fairly new to website design would read the standards and interpret them the same way a browser does? Using Chrome, the odds are getting better, and I approve of that trend.

I switched to chrome about 3 months back. But I need FF when I want to download flash videos. Apparently there is no alternative for Flashgot in Chrome. :(

I'm still resisting the urge to drop Firefox, mostly for political reasons. Google already controls a lot of what I do online, so I'm not giving them my desktop browser yet. Also, Firebug on Chrome isn't as good.

I know the feeling. I used to love FireFox, would suggest it to friends, feel a tiny spark of joy when I saw them move from the sluggish and buggy IE to FF. But Chrome just does it all faster, doesn't bug me about updates and is cleaner. It's a very good lesson for software devs - IE was getting more and more features, the UI was becoming bigger, more cluttered and more confusing as they tried to squeeze more in to make each release look bigger, like an improvement. Then google come along with a browser that doesn't have all that crap - and in fact has only a tiny UI, and everyone loves it. I see the same thing happening with other tools - I love uTorrent, because it's lightweight and dead simple, but they're releasing updates every few months that change the UI, try and squeeze in more, and it just doesn't need it. AVG used to be lightweight and discreet and now they're doing the same thing. Sometimes we WANT the software to just sit there, do it's job as quietly and quickly as possible and not pester us!

Definitely. On Windows I prefer Chrome, while on Android I prefer Safari (because the Chrome browser, ironically, is a lot worse on Honeycomb and prone to crashing).

I would suspect a plugin, not FF itself. Disable or remove all of them and see if you still have the problem.

Yeah, Chrome looks pretty nice, but I prefer not to use anything related to Google. Just a personal preference.

My feelings, too, which is why I went to Opera rather than Chrome. I don't knowingly use Google products.

I don't have any plugins and it did it on 3 different machines. I think it was FF itself.

I run an i7 processor with 8 gigs of ram and noticed the freezing as well a few weeks ago. I to still have FF installed but have went to chrome for most of my daily uses. have not tried opera.
Common sense is not a gift it's a curse. Those of us who have it have to deal with those that don't.... Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.
