Based on my off topic remark earlier, I was wondering... What do people here think of Anton Lavey? Not necessarily him as a person, but his writings and religion. I agree with many things he said. I disagree with many as well. I've read most of his writings. The funniest thing I see resulting from it all is that a church was founded, and people who claim to be Satanists joined it.... I don't know much about the church itself, but I can't see how someone who says they are a Satanist would then go and join a organization for any religion. I don't personally think I belong to any religion, however if there were an instance where I had to claim one, I would say I'm a Satanist. In fact, I used to say that when asked.

So you still worship a mythical being? Whats the difference, in that case, between any of the various mythical entities people choose to worship? BTW: even if there were a god why would you need to worship it? Would it expect worship? What could it possibly get from a bunch of tiny people worshiping it?

No. Satanists, as Lavey coined them, do not worship a being. Satan is a metaphor, not a mythical being.

Well, if there were a god and I had real proof that it wanted to be worshipped.. then so long as I got something out of it, probably.

          I dunno.

If there were, in fact, a god I don't think I could understand what it would get out of it. I would expect that it wouldn't want or need worship from us. I wouldn't really do it unless it were beneficial to me.

Actually, if I remember correctly, Lavey claims the word 'satan' comes from 'shaytan' which translates to an equivalent of 'I' or 'me'. As such Satanism is not about some mythical being, but about egoïsm. "Do what you will" is the message, as opposed to do what some book or priest says you should do. There are some rules to the philosophy, like others should not be bothered by your doing (theft, murder and other crimes are a no-go).

Lavey doesn't make up his mind with certainty what satan actually means. He also sights it (from somewhere.....) as being the "bringer of light" and "bearer of truths". Satan is typically some sort of combatant/enemy. It is meant to represent the "evil" in man. Lavey simply took the scape goat and threw it in the face of anyone who decided to be offended by it. Satan (and devil, etc) has meant many things over time. It has not always been bad. Short version is I agree. I was just providing a simple reply above, just to say that "no, I don't worship a mythical being". I guess "no" would have been OK as well.... -edit- Hmm.. just noticed that wasn't a reply to me :D Anyway, most my post still applies, all but the bit on the end -end-

Anton was someone smart enough to ride a wave of publicity to get booze and sex. There's not really any such thing as a satanist in any meaningful sense IMO. But, it's probably true to say that if you live the way you want to, and don't believe in any God, you're as much of a satanist as it's possible to be.

Then again, he's on the cover of a Beatles album and you're not. ;P (I'd love to do a film about Crowley in his younger years. )

                                      I'm a Santaist myself.

I've only met two other Satanists in person. One I had known for some time, the topic just never came up.

No, I'm a Santaist; I'm only Christian when it means I get presents.
