with a military base in ~130 of 196 countries in the world, spending more than 1.4 TRILLION dollars a year on death and destruction. (44% of global military spending 11% of USA GDP) Imagine how awesome the health care / education / etc systems could be if that money was spent on productive things. You could have free health care instead of chucking people without insurance out of the back of the ambulance. you could have free universities and have the most highly skilled and innovative people on the planet. sadly this is not the truth.

Yes because more government spending will fix health care and education.

Anything with the words "military, death, and USA" all in the same sentence, needs to be done in the box of soap.

I do find it funny when people view ONLY military spending as wasteful. "Yeah, the government is great at appropriating funds and providing service otherwise!"

the military consumes the largest portion of the US federal budget - the DoD alone spends something like $25,000 every second. so, if you really want to save money by cutting wasteful spending, that seems like a good place to start. most of the other things people complain about when they're talking about "wasteful spending" are nothing compared to the DoD.

Sure, but if you are going to start cutting wasteful spending, don't stop there. And please do not use the wasteful military spending for wasteful domestic projects (which is what Killa said originally).

because american lobby groups have started to lobby our gov to do away with "Pharmac" which is a subsidised drug program (when i go get a prescription it costs me about $5 for the drugs). They also want to privatise our ACC company (gov accident insurance) which provides free care after an accident of ANY sort. I could rant on...

Not sure you really meant to wonder there... It's almost as Windows vs Mac/Linux/Unix discussion. On one side it's logical and make sense, and then there is other side that is guided by pure faith... Besides - follow the money - fear sells, scared people would spend any money (even at the expense of healthcare, education and basic social services) to get perceived piece of mind even from imaginary problems.

sorry man, but i don't see how we're talking about different things. the topics of military spending, and wasteful spending, and people who complain about waste in one area but not the other are kindof all the same topic, when you're talking about what the government spends its money on vs what it doesn't.

Now see you should have bitched about how the US uses "free" trade agreements to support the US private industry run rampant across the planet. You would have got a much more positive response. Bitching about the military from NZ is just silly, you only piss off the military supporters without getting the real point across.

sorry man, but i don't see how we're talking about different things. the topics of military spending, and wasteful spending, and people who complain about waste in one area but not the other are kindof all the same topic, when you're talking about what the government spends its money on vs what it doesn't.
