How is it that we've come this far yet voice messages aren't even recorded on our own phones by default

Is it because the majority of voice message are left when it has not been possible for the caller to get connected to your phone?

Nope. Over 95% of calls I don't answer are while I'm looking at it wondering who it could be. The phone is off for about 2 or 3 hours a month. [Edit: Above question just re-read. Hmm, silly response this is when viewed from that perspective. 'you(me)' is rather different than 'you(everybody)' Nevermind, I'm sure to make somebody feel smug with my lack of wit

Why is it that if someone calls you on your mobile and you don't/can't answer and they don't leave a message, it is almost expected for you to call them back to see what they wanted anyway? Back in the day, you could call someone on the phone and if they couldn't answer, they had no idea that you had called or what you wanted. If you wanted a call back, you would leave a message. I can't tell you how many times I've been asked "Didn't you see I called?", to which I reply "Yeah".

Call them back at 04:30am. Say "you didn't leave a message so I assumed it was urgent" Problem doesn't repeat

You just need to retrain the people who call you. I never ring back just because someone called me.

The point is that people today think the world revolves around them, and if they don't get a callback they become incredulous.

It isn't being bothered that gets me, it's the fact that they called and expect me to call back without any indication I should. Leave a message or text that you need to talk to me. Worse yet is when I call someone for something stupid and they don't answer, then they call back an hour later asking what I wanted. By that time the point is lost.

I'm with you, I don't recognize the number I don't answer, if its important you can leave a message, otherwise I will assume it was not important enough to warrant a message therefor it is not important enough for me to call back. Even if I recognize the number and just didn't/couldn't answer for whatever reasons, I still may not call back if you don't leave a message. The Big boss at work and the wife/kids are about the only exceptions I make to that rule.

The corrolary to that is when I realize I called the wrong number and hang up without leaving a message, but the person I inadvertenly called calls me back to see what I wanted. If I wanted something I would have left a message - for crying out loud.

When people complain that I didn't call back, I patiently explain, "I bought this phone for my convenience, not yours."

My phone is rarely off, but often out of signal. In the middle of large buildings (moving around at work for example), driving through a forest (to or from work), in just about any pub in Lichfield, and so on. It is generally when a call goes straight through to voicemail a message gets left as there is no missed call notification, although Orange do text you to say voicemail was reached but no message left.

If it's important, they'll send a text. Phone calls aren't for important things.

Completely agree with this. Voice mails can be long winded, and unless you pay extra for 'visual voice mail', I have to sit there listening and write down some information. Then, I usually miss something and have to listen to the whole thing again. A text message can also be replied to more discretely when you are busy.
