How do we name it?
-
I hate to say it but I do like the name. Maybe I just need more sleep :) cheers, Chris Maunder
I think you do need some more sleep.. BOB was just a stupid idea of Microsoft, in a galaxy a long, long time ago. I think if we name it Bob, it's future is already written :( We could just call it Alex, ofcourse  -- Alex Marbus www.marbus.net But then again, I could be wrong.
-
You definitely need more sleep, Chris! Bob, as we all remember, is the name of a serial killer from the tv-series "Twin Peaks" played by, now deceased, Franka Silva. Not really an appropiate name for the CP mascot, if I must say so. I would suggest the name "Pointer", because of his pointy little head :-) Christian Skovdal Andersen
Well, when you say "Bob" I think of a, long gone, userinterface from MS - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"
-
.. or a name that has the same initials CP hmm, Chris' Pet ? -- Alex Marbus www.marbus.net But then again, I could be wrong.
Well, I still like Bob. Maybe Chris's pet is named Bob....
-
Chris, Maybe a stupid idea, but how about 'we' (the cp-members) create a little contest where everyone can submit a name for this friendly fellow? -- Alex Marbus www.marbus.net But then again, I could be wrong.
What could be more obvious? (PP for short, of course ).
-
I vote for 'Bob'.
As in the god 'Bob' from Church of the Subgenius? ;) -- Russell Morris Georgia Institute of Technology "Lisa, just because I don't care doesn't mean I'm not listening..." - Homer

How about we call him Larry, and say he's the garbage collector from .Net? Larry: .Net Sanitation Engineer

Looks "Geeko" to me, speaking philosophically... "Aliesh," "Greenko," "Sourcie," or "Codie" could be the name. Then again, what do I care... A :rose: is a :rose: ------- Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed. (Francis Bacon) Nature, to be apprehended, must be obeyed. (Ayn Rand)

You're right.. I'm sorry, but I already fell in love with the littl' fellow :D -- Alex Marbus www.marbus.net But then again, I could be wrong.
Oh well, it seems I'm the only one who doesn't like (much) the alien:(( Not that it's bad, I just think we could find something better. Anyway, since everyone else likes it, I'm starting to like it too;) But "Bob"... tsss.

... Codie ... for some reason that one made my smile when I read it. I think it would be a perfect name for Chris - I er.... the alien. Some non-mythical t-shirts could be made up and handed out at various shows, etc. "Codie, the Code Project mascot". David

Oh yes please ! "Codie" is a great name, "Bob" is fine too. So let us decide :-) BTW: I have just learned that there where T-Shirts on the CP-Tour available. Any chance get a T-Shirt when not being on the road show ? Regards, Tom. -- Tom Wellige http://www.wellige.com

I'm not sure this is a show stopper, but Cody is a character used by Distinct, and the SIIA has an annual awards program they call the codie awards. I doubt these would be confused with the CP alien, but we should be careful. http://www.siia.net/events/awards/2001codies/enter.htm http://www.distinct.com/ And if you're into German programming: http://www.codie.com David

I vote for 'Bob'.
My problem is that I associate 'bob' with bad programming :) There seems to be a link between the use of a variable named 'bob' in code and just plain lousy software. Not sure why. David

Yeah, a poll would solve this little problem, don't forget to add 'Bob' as an option. ;P

Valid point. I don't think I had any of the above mentioned usage in mind, though. The name just came in a sort of flow--codie, sourcie, like that. In fact, first I thought of Coddie, and then changed over to Codie. But, now that you remind us of Codie Awards, I do remember having read the name before. 16 years in use... Must have appeared on the back of a lot of T-shirts... So, there might be a conflict-of-usage thingie about it. Guess we would be better off having a separate identity granted to the alien--something more than Codie => Coddie. Back to creativity board, guys... More input, please! (I have run out of my creativity for the time being :) ) ------- Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed. (Francis Bacon) Nature, to be apprehended, must be obeyed. (Ayn Rand)

Well, you knew I had to come back :) Pl. run the following through modifiers/filters: - c2p2 (obviously inspired by R2D2) - CODIAK (o.i. by ENIAC etc.) - codino (o.i. by neutrino) - CodingTon (self explanatory, but most objectionable!) Now, I have really run out of ideas (whether good/bad/ugly). ------- Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed. (Francis Bacon) Nature, to be apprehended, must be obeyed. (Ayn Rand)

Good point. That would then narrow the field to Carol, Ted or Alice. Unless we go with 'Fred'... hmmm...
