basically like wordpress is meant for blogging, so if i create from scratch i can make sure the features of a family website are the main components. For Wordpress it was blogging and was initially targeted to bloggers.

i was thinking of creating a unique downloadable and extensable website for creating family website, something like wordpress but more focused on families. like with family tree, photo album, video, contacts and news, what typically a family website has. It has been done many times already. Unless your site offers something new and exciting that the others don't then I would not bother.

Huh? Exactly what market are you targeting with this? The average family probably can't host a website. The average family certainly can't extend it.

If I were you, I wouldn't spend a lot of time doing everything from Scracth. Instead, I would do a "family" template for an existing Content Management System, for instance Umbraco[^]
