Many websites and applications offer such features. Does it bother anyone else that the search feature tends to always have a magnifying glass even though it is searching outside of what you are looking at broadly while the find has a binnoculars and is searching with in what you are looking at finely? Who the heck originally set these icons as a standard?
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

magnifying glass is for zoom. binoculars are for find/search. Anything else is just silly, to me.

Binoculars allow you to carefully inspect a larger area than you could with just your eyes, sure it's a smaller area at any given point in time but you can move your head and the binoculars to make up for it.

Right... So if I am searching for a document with in a folder (the large area) it makes sence. However in this case we use Magnifying glasses. A magnifying glass allows one to bring to focus a desired area of something already in front of them. So it makes more sence IMO that it would be used on the find features.

Do you still click the Floppy Disk to save? When did you last save anything to a floppy? If that is not bad enough, Here[^] is a sign to warn of traffic cameras. When did you last have your picture taken with a camera that looked like that?

Thats a totally different issue. That is obsolecence of technology. This is misrepresentation. Its like clicking the "floppy" to email it and clicking the "snail mail" icon to save it.

Search is silly, I don't want to search, I want to find something. I am result-oriented. And I'll use whatever tool that yields the results I'm looking for... :)

I've always seen the distinction as method vs. goal (to find something, you search for it). Still, now that you mention it, from now on until the time of retiring synapses, no matter if it says "search" or "find" I will ponder whether they chose the right icon, and forget what I wanted to find. Tell me again, I like you... why? :mad:

Some would argue standards must be met for "correctness". I agree. It has no place for search or 'find' for that matter. It was already used as the zoom icon.

Most users probably wouldn't make a distinction between the two though, so why not use the same icon for both?
