Just been following the live feeds from the MS announcement. It is a tablet, website has been updated and youtube video is now up; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpzu3HM2CIo[^] http://www.microsoft.com/surface[^] Looks not bad really......... edit: the youtube video reminds me of Audi commercials......

Typical Microsoft… Claim it's new and different… it's not. Demo crashed. Over designed. Fairly ugly. Not available for months. No definite pricing.
Used to be called vapourware, these days it includes hardware and is a standard part of the marketing procedure. This is one for fanbois everywhere!

Wow! All 9 of them… :rolleyes: I wonder what made Microsoft announce this now… say versus 2-3 months when they might be able to sell them or even give a simple price.
In the press release it was said the RT version would be prices in the "other tablet" ballpark and the Pro version in the "UltraPC Notebook" ballpark...so $400-$500 and $800-$900 ranges :confused:

Ummm… I see tablets ranging from $199 - $900 and Ultrabooks ranging from $700 - $1200. I say - If its close enough to call a press conference and demo / announce a new product its close enough to put a real, honest price on it - not an implied vague range. How difficult is that?

At those prices, Microsoft can go elephant themselves. The "Surface" is elephanted even before it is born.... not a bad achievement! I expect to see a huge demand for warehouse space where unsold "Surface"s will be stored ceiling-high. Anyone remember Zune, the original version? And what an ugly screen! It looks like the classic 15-puzzle. You know, where you have a 4x4 row with 15 tiles and one empty space and you move those tiles around till you get the numbers in sequence.

What WAS called Surface is now called PixelSense. Apparently, they changed the name around to make room for the slate to be called Surface. I think there's a lot of details to be released, but it may turn out to be a pretty good slate. I think the real "killer app" for this new machine would have been if it actually ran Surace 2.0 (PixelSense). Now THAT would be really cool!

The screen is because of W8 - I'm not a fan of the Metro UI - I really hope there is a "switch to classic" mode...or someone comes out with a WinXP type shell replacement like they with Win7 ... which it looks like they have [^] :cool:

Not really… anymore when Apple, Dell, Sony, HP, etc… announce hardware it's usually available immediately or VERY soon.
I hate micro brain univoters - fixed! I guess it is just MS then, I seem to have seen this throughout it's history. Don't apple pre announce, pre sell their icrap stuff or are they imminent deliverables.

With hardware Apple plays this game... Leak hints to un-named sources and let the fanbois foam at the mouths for a few months building hype. When they finally announce it, they have exact pricing and deliverables ready to go. Then ship dates lengthen to create "shortages" and more hype. Microsoft on the other hand could screw up a one horse funeral.

I think you're confusing something else with Zune. I've two zunes (since 2008), and it doesn't have a tiled UI. :~ While I agree with the rest of your post, zune is an excellent product.

Oops, my bad! II said two things. First, the 15-puzzle. Second, how the original Zune was a clunker compared to the sleek iPod. I didn't make myself clear on the second point. Merely pointed out that the iPad looks better and had better functionality just like the iPod did.:rose:

What 'better functionality' does ipod have in comparison with zune? I've used both, and I can't understand your statement. Zune has blazing fast UI, and all the functionality that ipod had to offer (minus the crapware itunes). Just too sad that zune wasn't as much a hit. But hey, an 'ipod' is supposed to be cool, right?!

No need to get hot under the collar. That is why I offered a rose in my last reply. I am NOT an Apple fanboi. I have not owned a single Apple product in my life. Any portable player I use, I load the music I want from CDs. I don't buy it off some iTunes store. Now, does that make you feel better? PS. Read the reviews at the time the Zune was originally released.

Having followed all the links on this thread, watched the video on YT, which appears to me be a commercial for ball bearings and/or mercury (directed by Ridley Scott ?), read the .pdf file shared by one poster ... and also having read various very shallow pieces on CNET and gizmodo: I can only conclude: Never has less been said about less in a product announcement. If I were a significant MS OEM making hardware for the current flavor of the Win Os, and, busy making new hardware devices for the (still obscure) future versions on both ARM and Intel: I would not be a happy camper. This quote from a gizmodo review left me with a sense of horror: "And then there's typing on it. We couldn't do that! Notably, every single Surface tablet Microsoft let us put our hands on either was turned off, or didn't have a keyboard connected. I kept hearing how quickly you could type on it—"I did 63 word per minute the first time I used it," one Microsoft employee told me—but there was no way to try this out for ourselves."[^] best, Bill
