I might consider buying a Surface tablet if Visual Studio will work on it. And I may have bought an iPad if I could develop software on it. Are any of you thinking of getting a Surface tablet? What do you think you'd use it for?

Windows 8 Pro version will be able to run legacy Windows applications, ie. every Windows app released to date, including desktop, Metro apps, and anything else. So this should clear any doubt about running VS on surface. You can connect Surface to the monitor and you are all set to develop software using surface even at office. - Kishore http://kishore1021.wordpress.com/[^]

I've got VS2008 running on a netbook for when I'm on support in remote areas and don't want the weight of a full size laptop (camping etc.) and it's fine - just damn slow. I imagine VS on the x86 version of the Surface will be far, far better than that as it's based on an ultrabook spec rather than a netbook spec. I'm certainly going to try it - though not necessarily with the MS device specifically.

The MS Surface pro comes closest to being a suitable replacement for my current netbook of any of the w8 machines I've seen so far. I can (akwardly) pocket a 10" laptop; but not an 11.6" model; and find being able to do so useful enough at times to be a worthwhile feature. Needing a real OS rules out all the arm based fondle slabs. The only major problem I have with the MS model is that at 1080p, I'll have to run the desktop at a non-native resolution (720p). A minor issue is that I'd really prefer >10h of runtime to the 8(?) I've seen quoted for the surface. I could probably manage with 8, but battery decay would become a problem sooner than I'd like.

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. Not sure I'd want to develop for Android. I have a Nook Color, and the poor quality has left a bad taste in my mouth (you can search to see some posts I made about issues I've had with my Nook).

Yeah, the single tiny screen might be a bit limiting, and I'm not sure it will have the type of resources (e.g., RAM) that VS requires. Though it would probably be convenient for testing the native features of the Surface (touch and such), and might actually work well for compiles (assuming the Surface has an SSD that is reasonably fast).

Just out of curiosity did you ever consider rooting[^] your Nook. I am running CyanogenMod 7 and I love it. I can read my books, play android games, read email, and get on the internet. It was a bit of a pain rooting my Nook Color, but is Cyanogem Mod 7 OS is significantly better than the B&N. Just a thought.

The "Surface Pro" will probably run it but you'll want to attach an external monitor. A 10" screen isn't particularly good for development. Naah ... won't buy one myself. I'll keep my 15.6" notebook for development, that or I'll do it on the 22" screen on my XPS. If I want to read a book I'll pick up my iPad and leave the laptop on the desk. I've bought enough hardware for awhile, myself! ;-)

Sure, it'll work on the surface; but underneath - uh oh!

Nope, probably more trouble than it's worth (for me in particular) and there's always the risk I'll run into a new set of problems.

Nah, it should work either way, especially VS 11, which MS is trying to make as widely usable as possible, that's why they now have VS 11 Express have most features of the Pro edition. CORRECTION: VS 11 will work on Surface Pro, but not likely on RT (no plans yet anyway). Sorry for the wrong post earlier.

"which MS is trying to make as widely usable as possible" It isn't - won't even install on XP or Server 2003. VS10 would even install on W2K but not VS11.

It should work on the Surface Pro. The pure RT version won't run the desktop.

I went to one of the Windows 8 Tech Day events and this question was raised. The answer, I seem to recall, was "no, VS11 will not run on a tablet". :(

Should run on the PRO version!, the question is...will the keyboard be up to the challenge? don't know about you but when the time comes to code...the keyboard is REALLY important for me :)
