Does anyone have any experience with any really good free graphics editors ? I can't afford Photoshop. Whats popular now ? M$ Paint just isn't doing it. Words on JPG files come out blurry after you save it. Really bad .. Thanks in advance !

GIMP or Paint.NET are popular choices.

I find GIMP very good for things I can do. For things I cannot less so. For things that I can nearly do it can be incredibly frustrating. I am quite prepared to accept that is down to my limitations rather than the software though.

Paint.Net is, IMHO, the easiest to use, free, most powerful(for the money) option. Gimp has more functionality but at the expense of a steeper learning curve. Both are bitmap editors Inkscape is a vector drawing tool - which I dont have much experience with - but I'm downloading it for the mac as we speak!

There used to be a Gimp plugin (Gimpshop IIRC) which made Gimp's UI the same (ish!) as Paintshop Pro's....might help

But it doesn't process bitmap images - except to overlay vector graphics (i.e. text annotations, draw an "X marks the spot") on a photo. I've found GIMP to be different to Photoshop. On the few occasions that I've needed to use it, it's done what I wanted.

It's not free, but it's cheap - PaintShopPro 9 (The last version before it was Corelized). Get yourself a graphics tablet (WACOM do some very nice ones) and a copy of PSP9 from FleaBay - lovely! But never store images as JPEG - it's a lossy compression algorithm and you will loose detail each time you save, regardless of which program you use. Changing the settings for Jpeg files can make a big difference though! A quick look at FleaBay shows PSP9 new at under £10 (not sure I believe it's real, but...) and brand new tablets for about £20. A pressure sensitive pen and decent software can make a big difference in the quality of your output!

Does anyone have any experience with any really good free graphics editors ? I can't afford Photoshop. Whats popular now ? M$ Paint just isn't doing it. Words on JPG files come out blurry after you save it. Really bad .. Thanks in advance !

that could be a matter of changing the JPEG compression setting. higher quality will do a better (tho never perfect) job of preserving edges. depending on your needs, it could be good enough, though. none of the formats which will preserve edges (PNG, GIF, etc) will do a good job of compressing photographs, so you have to decide which is more important: edges or file size.

What I meant was to save as jpeg as the last operation - and go back to the original file if there are changes to be made. But I didn't express myself well. I don't normally work with 4GB bitmaps, around 700Mb is the largest I have needed. Even that size was a PITA to play with.
