What part of the states are you in? So I can be sure never to go there?

Are you aware that swimming pools tend to be filled with water, and that using them usually means that some of that water will touch your skin? Advice: no swimming pool.

And... why is that a problem?

Yes, I think the way the liner lays is important in that if there are too many folds then dirt and algae can collect. Also I was thinking of the 'infinity' type pool, ie with an overflow on one side. These stay a lot cleaner since the surface is sucked off repeatedly taking floating debris with it. I was also going to go for a salt water pool. These stay cleaner than chlorine pools too. Not sure why though. Beyond that I dont foresee many issues. Many pools use PVC liners so with the usual pumps filters and chemicals it should be OK. re the sand, yes. Pond supply firms do underlay, I was thinking about both. The big advantage is the size of the thing you can do. A pond can be very cheap even when very large, and the second is the interesting shapes one can do: Pools are kind of boring. Rectangular, and really for swimming. A pomd has a far more interesting shape and will be better for playing in IMO.

Because they're automatic-ish. You don't have to reply on your memory to refill the chlorine dispensers. ;)

My extended family did something similar and stocked it with fish. It was safe to swim in, too, at least I think so, because we weren't not allowed to.

There is actually a way of building a pool using pool liners instead of concrete. Problem a) if your pool needs draining in the summer -- forget it. You'll lose your liner b) use the wrong cleaner and it will suck up your liner. c) still need the same chemicals and just as much to keep clean

Yeah, many pools use liners, over concrete or concrete and panels. As far as I know they can be emptied though. Fiberglass is different though, if it is emptied it can deform, which sounds crap to me.

What was it, the Eskimos have 30 words for snow and the French 200 for surrender? I jest, but what are they going to do complain to the U.N. about it then ignore the resolution anyway?

Helped a friend build a huge Coy pond using a membrane then packed concrete on inside of hole. Turned out real nice.

My aren't we playing coy? :) I think you mean a "koi" pond. Unless you are building a puddle of water to play hide and seek with.

Expensive buggers they are, so I got to thinking, how about a swimming pond. Dig a hole with sloping sides and with a deep end. Chuck in some blue liner, available from some pond supply shops, and stick in the usual pumps and filters. Looks like for a big pool the whole thing could be done for around 5k euros instead of 25k. Anyone done this or know of it being done? Got any advice? Tips?

I know from having a pond with a liner that some liners can get very slippery, so you want to check that when choosing the liner.
