Suggestion

One of the things that I love about coming to The Code Project (besides reading great articles :-D) is that you get input from all over the place, however, I sometimes find it hard to guess or know where people are from by just reading their post (unless it's Paul Watson with the nice logo in his sig). My suggestion is adding to the "My Settings" portion of user options the ability to allow people to show a flag beside their name in their posts (or somewhere that makes sense). So, if a person decides to show (or maybe don't even make it an option for users to reduce the overhead of including this feature) this a little icon of their nationality would appear beside their name in the post listings. I don't know how easy it would be to find such icons or even make them ... but I think it would be one of those "little things" that adds a lot to the site. Just a thought, Wally Atkins

Seriously cool idea, but where would it leave us travellers? I'd need an SA flag (home) and a UK flag (currently working) Poor Chris.... we are so demanding :-O

You can just read the user's profile and hope that s/he has specified a country. The problem is that not every person specifies a country, or if they do, sometimes they just specifify the first available country out of convenience. Nice too... but don't u feel that with that "flag" thing, it actually makes us less closed, or feel "not whole". Sorry, i don't know how to express it better... Perhaps someone who get my idea can help express it better. Weiye, Chen When pursuing your dreams, don't forget to enjoy your life...

I think I understand the point you are trying to express: That by displaying a flag beside each person we show how far apart that most of us are from one another when this website (or the internet as a whole) brings us so close together and connected despite of our locations. If I am way off in my intrepritation please let me know ... but, I find it to be very cool that despite all of the differences we have (no just were we live) that we come together to collaborate on our thoughts and ideas and have so many different takes on things. I personally think that something like a "flag" would just help me to understand "where you're coming from". :-D If technology is something that can bring us all together ... I'm all for it!

While this should have gone in the Suggestions Forum as mentioned, it is still a good post. I like the idea, but the country indicator should only display when you actually read a posters message. i.e. Not next to their name when the message is minimised. And checking peoples bio's is not the solution, it takes ages for the page to load and many people have not chosen their country properly. Having a more visual and immediate use of the country field though could make more people choose the correct country. dfu23 wrote: unless it's Paul Watson with the nice logo in his sig :-O :-D Go South Africa! Yes, that is roughly what i mean. Also, it minimized the conception of "Oh, u are not from my country" kind of thing. Maybe i am just over sensitive... ;) Weiye, Chen When pursuing your dreams, don't forget to enjoy your life...

I found a link (using Google, of course) to a free collection of National Flags Icons[^] I'd like to submit myself for putting in some time with Photoshop to make a collection of small GIF images from these icons if this suggestion comes to be included in CP (heck, I might just make them to use on my website :-D). I'll also post this in the Suggestions Forum ... but if you could pass this along to whoever might find this as useful to including this as a feature ... Thanks in advance, Wally Atkins

It seems like a waste of bandwidth to me. If you want to know a person's location, just ask him or her. Jon Sagara Hi! I'm Melanoma, Moley Russell's wart. -- Uncle Buck

Jon Sagara wrote: It seems like a waste of bandwidth to me Probably less bandwidth just having a small image of the flag than having to post three messages asking someone where they are from. Plus, instant gratification. If we have to ask, we have to wait. Also I am not going to ask every single person I am slightly interested in where they come from. If I have to ask then I will probably not bother. Why bother knowing at all? Because it is interesting enough. Either way lets not argue this, not that important. So where are you from, Jon Sagara? *Paul waits... and waits.. and waits.*

dfu23 wrote: but if you could pass this along to whoever might find this as useful to including this as a feature ... I just live here, don't work here :) Plus Chris, the head honcho (some say God but he can't tell me how come nothing rhymes with Orange so I don't believe that), reads the forums, especially the Suggestions forum. If he likes the idea it goes on his list, but his list is very long, we are demanding. What I recommend you do is this: Put one of those flags you found* into your sig, like I did with mine. Also have somewhere in your bio or on your personal message board how to put the image into a sig. The more people see it and like it the more they will do it, and next thing you know it's Woodstock, free love mixing with mud and you are Chevre to the masses of flag wavers. Lots of good ideas float about but remember Chris has given us quite a bit of freedom and the slack to implement many of them. So go do it, we are developers after all. If it is a hit then it may become an official CP feature and voila, you get famous and can retire to the Cuba and have Castro as your neigbour. * If they are not copyrighted or anything... if they are, draw your own flag! :)
